Autosport.com - Carroll to test for Ireland A1GP

GP2 race winner Adam Carroll has begun a rookie evaluation test for Team Ireland as the outfit ponder their driver plans for the new season.

Carroll, who has impressed on his return to GP2 with victories at Silverstone and the Hungaroring, is scheduled to drive the A1GP car at Snetterton today and tomorrow.

Team Ireland owner Mark Kershaw said that Carroll was just one driver being considered for the 2007/2008 season, which begins in Holland next month.

"This week's rookie evaluation is the beginning of our on-track work for season three," said Kershaw. "We invited Adam Carroll to take part in order to help us examine possibilities in the future.

"One of the great things about A1GP is that teams can evaluate and nominate a squad of drivers.

I would like to see Adam Carroll driving the Irish car. He has shown in GP2 how good he is and this could be his chance to display his talents on the world stage

Being in A1GP won't help his career though will it as A1 is a much lower standard than GP2 which he is doing well in at the moment.

He is probably alot better than all the drivers in A1GP and if Team Ireland do a good job he will most probably win the A1 championship for them if he gets the drive but it won't furthur his career.

He needs to stay in GP2 and win more races and hopefully a F1 team will give him a chance again and hopefully get more out of it than at Honda.

Unless he is doing A1GP throughout the winter to keep his race craft sharp and hopefully he can get a good drive in GP2 next season

But I do agree with you - the likes of Alex Yoong, Jos Verstappen, and others have never moved up since racing in A1GP. The only driver I can think of that has used it to boost his career is Nelson Piquet Jnr who started in the series before moving up to GP2 and then an F1 testing role

I wonder if Nico Hulkenberg will end up anywhere after he won the A1 championship.

I suspect that he won't, a seat in GP2 at best.

Lapierre and Premat were great for France in A1 but Lapierre is struggling in GP2 at the minute and Premat was utterly thrashed by Hamilton last season in GP2.

A1 cars just aren't good enough to be a step on the way to F1, they should be made fast and challenging to drive like GP2 cars. I don't think they are even that fast in a straight line either. 150 to 160 mph isn't is the best they can do.

Premat was utterly thrashed by Hamilton last season in GP2.

And Hamilton's doing it again this season with the F1 drivers, at this stage in the championship anyway, so that probably doesn't necessarily mean Premat is quite as bad as Hamilton may have showed him up to be ;)

A1 may not be a pinnacle of motorsport, but it is good fun to watch! I for one am looking forward to seeing Carroll in the series if this Ireland test goes anywhere - it will give us an opportunity to see him in a different series and assess how good he actually is.
