With some F1 teams under-achieving, and some having had questionable futures before, which will be the first to throw in the towel and quit the sport?

I will say Spyker on the grounds that Renault, Honda and Toyota have all committed long-term to F1 in terms of the Concorde Agreement, and will be tempted to stay by the new manufacturer-friendly regulations outlined in Max's latest "Framework for Discussion." STR have the money coming in from Red Bull, who have a massive motorsports project, remember, so they won't fold any time soon, even if the team as a whole seems to be lacking ambition at present. Essentially, the reason I picked Spyker was because it seems more likely than any of the others, but I can't honestly see any of them leaving in the near future.

Lets get this straight, I DON'T THINK IT WILL HAPPEN..........BUT

for the sake of arguement a whistle blower at Mclaren gave all the evidence needed to FIA to get them banned this year and next, would Mercedes dump Mclaren, and in what format would Mclaren come back..............if at all?

I think Mercedes would drop them and F1. Mclaren would then have the problem of not only keeping up with technology they cannot use on the track, but finding someone else who will buddy up with them in 2009. Mclaren would be the new Williams of the last few seasons.

I am going for Renault as historically they seem to enter and leave F1 almost on a whim.

First stint as a constructor 1977-85

Returned in 1989 as an engine supplier, left after 1997.

Returned as an engine supplier to Benetton in 2001 before taking over the team the next year.

Also Carlos Ghohn, Renault's CEO has been quoted as saying that F1 is only an investment if you are winning. With the team's drop in performance willl he be reviewing the F1 programme?

Finally for a historical parallel, it was going from a genuine championship contender to an also ran that led to them pulling out of F1 in 1985. Although in this stint they did not win a title, Alain Prost was within 10 points of the driver's crown in 1981, 1982 and 1983. The team was within 12 points of becomming constructor's champions in 1982 and 1983. In 1984 they slipped to 5th in the constructor's rankings and in 1985 were 7th.

They would come back as strong as they are now, I would have thought. Anyway, perhaps they would just focus on Prodrive, assuming Mclaren are the 'parent team'.

Back to the original question...

STR. I don't think they will leave the grid, but they will change ownership and name. Being a Red Bull B team is pointless if the car you receive isn't anything special. I think they would be better off doing it all themselves.
