I remember reading about this. Imagine how Macca's and Ferrari's fortunes would have been had he went to McLaren instead of Ferrari

Didn't Ron have comercial issue with schumi so they couldn't agree a deal (something to do with MS's cap deal etc.)

Actually rereading the title, it did sound like Ron wanted to nick ferrari's tea boy. He must be fantastic at making a brew.

Well, Ferrari seem to be very happy with what he's doing. I did hear that someone at Mclaren had got hold of the some documents that included his secret blend of tea leaves and the recipe for his famous tea cakes <whistle>

I have heard that was one of the sticking points. Shumi was selling his cap space, when McLaren were required their drivers to use the McLaren sponsors. I could be wrong, so don't wager anything important on this information.

Senna was allowed personal sponsorship. I think if Ron wanted Schumacher badly enough then he would have given way.

I think McLaren's firm policy of no Number 1 driver had more to do with it.

I think I read in a book about Schumi after his first year at Ferrari that he said he could have earned alot more money at McLaren as Marlboro were McLaren's primary team at the time and not Ferrari, but the reason he joined Ferrari was due to the potential that Ferrari had with Jean Todt only really starting to make an impact and John Bernard then designing the cars

Can't really disagree that Ferrari looked a far better prospect than McLaren during 1995. Though the Mercedes link must have been tempting.

Didn't Mereced have a claim on Michael Schumacher when he switched to Benetton at the end of 1991, only for it to expire after their first year back in F1 in 1994? Bet they regretted not bringing him to Sauber and then onto McLaren!

Er, how much money were marlboro offering for MS to come to McLaren? He was on mega bucks at Ferrari (rumoured to be £25M in his first year). <yikes>

That's what I thought. If he is on $25m a year at Ferrari, how much money were Marlboro going to pay him to go to McLaren!

Could Schumi have done the same at McLaren that he has done at Ferrari? I don't think Ron would have let him take half the Benetton technical staff with him to Macca

*but* - did MS go to Ferrari because he could take the staff as well, or because, maybe just as likely *they* were already off to Ferrari?

That's really an impossible question to answer. Shumi's time at Ferrari was a result of all the right people being in the right positions. Needless to say I don't think JT or Ross would have gone to McLaren.

The video doesn't seem to be working so I haven't watched it but I am responding to what other people have said.

It is true that in 1995 Ferrari looked a much better prospect then McLaren but out of the two McLaren were first to win a title at that point.

Jean Todt didn't follow Schumacher to Ferrari, he signed him for Ferrari. Todt started running Ferrari in 1993.

There were suggestions of a Schumacher/McLaren link even earlier. Back in 1993 when it was announced Senna would be leaving McLaren to join Williams there were rumours that Senna's replacement would be Schumacher.
