Lewis Hamilton says he is not too worried about teammate Fernando Alonso having closed the gap in the championship to just two points.

...

"The last race was an eventful one. So it will be good to come here and get back on form. But I really came away from the last race with a smile on my face. Yes, I lost 10 points, but I learned so much as to when I should switch to wet tyres or dry tyres.

"I also reminded myself in the race that you never give up. I had a puncture, I went into the gravel, I got stuck behind the safety car, I chose the wrong tyres, lots of different things happened in that race, but I kept on pushing to the end.

"So it was a good stepping stone for me, to prove to myself that never giving up is the key."

We've already had Raikkonen come out this week and say he can still win the title, and now Lewis is claiming that he can defend his two-point lead over Alonso. But after a couple of subpar races in France and Britain followed by the disaster at the Nurburgring, can Lewis bounce back and challenge for the WDC?

My gut feeling is that the honeymoon is over for Lewis, and in the second half of the season he will repeatedly be swamped by Massa, Alonso and Raikkonen, and will hence lose his championship advantage. But Lewis has proven me wrong on just about every point so far this season - so it'll be interesting to see if he can do so again now.

Thoughts?

I think Lewis is sinking. He has had a great year, but I just sence a little frustration kicking in, and he is a rookie, so it is understandable.

I would agree. He's done a great job up to now but you can't help but feel that he's been helped by Alonso and Raikkonen being a bit off-colour, so to speak, in the early part of the season. Hamilton will find it much tougher from here on in, I suspect.

I think he needs a big performance this weekend to show that he is not 'sinking'. I don't think he is, Nurburgring was unfortunate and his pace was very good, but he made what could be described as a youthful error. He wasn't to know that it was too early for dry tyres, he decided to go for it and now he knows to be more careful in future.

'The Ham' is a very tough-sounding nickname don't you think? ;)

I've called him The Ham since the start of the season. Along with Robert "The Beak" Kubica, I think they have the kind of nicknames that would make even a darts player cringe....

And for those who were thinking Lewis isn't yet a "proper" F1 driver....

"For sure I have Fernando breathing heavily down my neck, but that is not too much of a worry," ....

<yikes>

Lewis has mastered the art of being interviewed as an F1 driver.

If you pronounce his name in the "English-speaking-person-with-no-appreciation-for-foreign-pronunciations" manner, i.e. "Koo-beek-a," it makes sense. Plus he has that sizeable nose.

I agree with that. He is still matching Alonso for pace, it's just that it's now his turn to get some of the bad luck at McLaren.

I think he will probably compete for a win at Hungary as the car is less important there and a good driver can make a difference.

Well, I'd say Alonso has had better pace for the last few rounds, but Lewis is hardly on a slide.
