Heidfeld made to wait for new BMW deal

Nick Heidfeld will have to wait until after the summer break to secure his future at the BMW Sauber team, according to team boss Mario Theissen.

The German driver has emerged as one of the main challengers to Ferrari and McLaren this year, but he is yet to secure his future, although Theissen said talks are progressing well.

"We are in positive discussions but it's not sealed yet," Theissen told reporters at the Hungaroring circuit.

"Don't expect anything during this weekend. It will probably be after the summer break."

BMW's possible line-up looks set to remain unchanged in 2008, especially following Sebastian Vettel's move to Toro Rosso to replace Scott Speed.

Vettel, who was BMW's third and reserve driver, was released from his contract with the German squad to race for Toro Rosso in the remaining races of the season.

Who else is there? Vettel has been confirmed at Toro Rosso, but Glock isn't in the same league as Heidfeld. Why not just announce that Nick is staying and get it over and done with

Probably down to money I reckon.

I believe the delay has always been money negotiations.... and with Vettel being released to the Torro Rosso squad... Nick has strengthened his hand a little... but it is both their interest to continue together.

I heard Nick has been offered 2008 with 2009 & 2010 as options...

I guess they are waiting to see what kind of pay rise he deserves.

They would look beyond foolish if someone else nabbed him.

Heidfeld would be very, very silly if he was to be "nabbed" by any team other than Ferrari or McLaren. BMW have the most promise of any team on the grid at the moment, in my view.

Unless, of course, Renault can get their act together....<think>
