Autosport.com - Alonso absent from FIA press conference

World champion Fernando Alonso has skipped Thursday's FIA press conference ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver was scheduled to appear alongside another four drivers, but for reasons yet unknown the British squad asked Alonso to be excused from the press conference.

The team also cancelled the usual media session with British driver Lewis Hamilton.

I wonder if the team just decided to pull him out of the press conference or they cleared it with the FIA? We have already seen that Sam Michael was fined by the FIA for being seven minutes late earlier in the season

The current situation must be very stressful for the drivers. They seem to be the forgotten party in all this spying mess. What ever has gone on, the drivers are the innocent victims that ultimately will be screwed up by and unjust decisions.

Not a bad option for McLaren IMO. Lewis and Fernando get paid to go fast, not to interpret FIA rules.

So yes, and it's a good idea.

Yup, let's be honest, not one journo is going to be interested in asking the drivers about the GP and the drivers aren't qualified to comment on the whole nonsense of it and shouldn't be subjected to a debate about things beyond their control.....

I'm not refering to his language skills. He has an inability to keep his mouth shut about anything, be it in Spanish, English or Double Dutch, though he isn't as vocal as Massa.

I believe this is to stop the press asking the embarrassing question 'how do you feel about racing for a team that the WMSC says has broken the sporting regs but somehow managed not to punish?'

Looks like it, and I would say it makes sense. The matter is not one for the drivers to deal with, and no doubt that in the press conference they would be asked questions that they are in no position to answer.
