Autosport.com - Fisichella expects to stay at Renault

Italian Giancarlo Fisichella is expecting to remain at the Renault team next year despite the French squad's disappointing season.

The 34-year-old Roman has been with Renault since the 2005 season, and his curent contract expires at the end of the year.

Renault have endured a difficult 2007 after two championship victories in a row, but Fisichella says he wants to stay at the team next season.

"We started the season with a car that wasn't great and still we haven't got the pace. I'm doing my best and I'm working really hard and for that I'm expecting once again to be confirmed for next year," Fisichella told reporters ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

"Soon we'll know - but I don't know when.

Should they keep him? I think they should he seems to have stepped up another level this season

Fisi has done a solid job this year, much better than in 2005 and 2006 - shows what stepping out of Alonso's shadow has done for him - and Renault certainly should keep him on. However, whether they will is another story. Flavio has Nelson Piquet waiting in the wings and will be eager to be back on championship-winning form in 2008, so he could still drop Fisi.

Kovalainen has probably had a slight edge in the last few races, but I think Fisi has done enough to keep his seat. Renault need someone of his experience next year and he is still one of F1's better drivers in my opinion.

Heikki is a upcomig talent. i.e. keep him.

Piquet needs race experience in F1.

Renault needs the input of an experienced driver whilst they are struggling to develop the car.

It's a juggling act whether to race Piquet or Fisi. My opinion would be to farm Piquet out to another for a year.

I think Renault need to let Fisi go in 2008.
Piquet Jnr is the man to take Renault into a new era with the team.
Kov has started to produce good performance's now so to drop him would be a mistake.

Fisi has done well so far this year but he will never take the team to a Championship.

Fisi would be a asset to a team lower down the field maybe even Toyota <think>

I agree Hobbes. It is evident from Heikke's rough start to the year that a bit of race experience would be beneficial for piquet before he steps into the renault breach. May be it won't be essential (it wasn't for Lewis, but that's another story), but it can't hurt.

I hear what you're saying JIM, but Renault are trying to develop a car and push forward, doing that with two inexperienced drivers will be an uphill climb.

Hamilton is not a fair comparison, he has for all intents and purposes stepped into a potentially championship winning car from the off. We can only wonder how he might have struggled if he'd spent his early races in midfield in a slug of a car.....

and no I'm no trying to turn this into a Lewis debate <no>

Just using him to explore the merits/downsides of running two rookies.....

Well, this time last year, or thereabouts, I was saying that Mac needed to farm Hamilton out for another year and ought to let PdlR do a year as he had experience etc, etc.... I think we could say that maybe it wouldn;t have been the best plan looking at things now....!

But he seems very nice <angel>

Maybe he could be a test driver :)

So was I, Norbs, but this time last year we didn't expect McLaren to build a championship-winning car for 2007. The point is that Hamilton may have struggled more if he had been in a midfield team with an uphill struggle in terms of development, as opposed to being at the head of the field where the development work is limited to keeping pace with the rest of the teams. Piquet would find it far more difficult to come in at Renault than Hamilton did at McLaren; unless, of course, Renault build another championship-winning car for next year....
