itv.com/f1 - Bourdais: Toro Rosso door still open

Champ Car ace Sebastien Bourdais says Toro Rosso’s signing of Sebastian Vettel does not mean his own chances of joining the team are over, despite STR’s option on him expiring on Tuesday.

The Frenchman has completed three tests for the Red Bull-owned squad since December and the team’s co-owner Gerhard Berger revealed last month that it had an option on his services until the end of July.

However STR announced on Tuesday that it had signed BMW’s young star Sebastian Vettel to replace the axed Scott Speed with immediate effect, although a second seat at the team is still thought likely to be made available for next season at the expense of Tonio Liuzzi.

So will we see the STR line-up being Bourdais/Vettel next season? Seems a bit odd that Bourdais is considering joining a team that was Minardi two years ago - a team struggling at the back of the grid and who are now giving him a run for his money in ChampCar

That and Sebass in the best team in Champ Car is being given a run for his money by an F1 reject (in the same chassis). I just don't see Sebastian doing will in F1, not any better than Speed anyway.

There is so much talk and hype about signing Vettel and Bourdais for STR but what about the car's relative performance? If they can't improve the performance of their package, then it seems unlikely that replacing Liuzzi/Speed with Vettel/Bourdais will do any good. Is there some hidden factor, like sponsorship money, etc??

The Speed/Toro Rosso saga just gets worse - this is what Bourdais could be letting himself in for!

<yikes> Really happy families.

While Tost's reason for the pitstop delay might be correct, any highly strung driver is going to be a bit miffed when he has just retired from a race due to circumstances, which last week imo were pretty much beyond any drivers control. Speed didn't go off due to stupid driving errors, but the crazy weather, along with a sizeable number of other drivers including Hamilton, and for Tost to be blaming Speed for going off is not what I would expect from a supportive team principal. <no>

He's obviously not got any ambition then, if he wants to go to STR.

For some people to even get to drive in F1, what ever the team, is the achievement of a life long dream. Not everyone can step in as a rookie and drive for a top team straight away....
Having said that, I'm not sure that STR would be my first pick of teams....

Just what i think Rob, he is good in champcar but he is only 10 points ahead of the mighty <whistle> Doornbos mid way through the season which is hardly great considering he is a rookie. He should do ok, but will probably be beaten by Vettel

Bourdais doesn't appear to have that dream, IMO. He hardly seems thrilled about the idea of racing in F1.
