This will be the 22nd world championship race to be held in Hungary since it made its debut on the calendar in 1986

All of the world championship races have been held at the Hungaroring. Since the track is only used once a year, it is very dusty and dirty, and along with its tight and twisty nature means that overtaking is rare.

The first race in 1986 attracted a huge crowd of 200,000 and was the first grand prix to be held behind the Iron Curtain. It was won by Nelson Piquet after a brilliant battle with Ayrton Senna

For the first 3 years at the Hungaroring there was an extra chicane placed after Turn 3 due to swamp-like conditions on the original straight succeeding this corner

In 1989 Nigel Mansell took a famous victory for Ferrari after starting 13th on the grid. He took the lead from Ayrton Senna after the Brazilian was slowed behind Stefan Johannsan’s Onyx.

Nigel Mansell won his first and only championship in Hungary in 1992 after a dramatic race which seen him drop out of the points at one stage. He managed to claw his way back up through the field to finish second behind Ayrton Senna, which was enough to take the title

A year later Damon Hill took his first F1 win at the circuit after coming close several times that season. A year later and Jos Verstappen took his first ever F1 podium at the circuit after unlapping himself from team-mate Michael Schumacher and overtaking a slowing Martin Brundle on the last lap

Williams took this constructor’s championship at the circuit in 1996 after dominating the season. This feat was repeated by Ferrari in 2001, 2002 and 2004

Damon Hill nearly took a famous victory for Arrows at the circuit in 1997. After a brilliant overtaking move on Schumacher at Turn 1, he looked odds-on to take Arrow’s first win after 21 years of trying. However, a hydraulic problem in the final few laps meant he was caught and passed by his former team-mate at Williams, Jacques Villeneuve. He held on to take second.

Michael Schumacher took victory in 1998 after an inspired strategy by Ross Brawn. He switched the German from two to three stops mid-race, meaning he had to put in a series of fast laps and he emerged from his last stop ahead of David Coulthard. He also lapped his fellow championship contender Mika Haikkinen, who was suffering from some mechanical problems.

Schumacher also clinched his fourth world championship in Hungary in 2001. He managed to better this in 2002 by winning the championship two rounds earlier in France.

Fernando Alonso joined Damon Hill by taking his maiden win at the circuit in 2003. He finished 16 seconds ahead of second-placed Kimi Raikkonen, and even managed to lap Michael Schumacher in the process. This race also seen Hungary’s first and only driver to enter into F1, when Zsolt Baumgartner was given his debut in the Jordan after replacing Ralph Firman, who had a huge accident after losing his rear wing at Turn 4

2006 saw the first-ever wet Hungarian Grand Prix. After a dramatic practice session that seen both Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher given time penalties for qualifying, it was Jenson Button who came through the spray to take his first and so far only F1 win. It was also Honda’s first win as a constructor since 1967
