BBC Sport - Silverstone Plan Gets Green Light

A £25m redevelopment of Silverstone, which could help secure the British Grand Prix's future, has been approved.

Members of the British Racing Drivers' Club, who own the Northamptonshire circuit, backed the ambitious scheme at an extraordinary general meeting.

It includes new grandstands, pit and paddock facilities, a science park, manufacturers' test centre, hotel and conference centre, plus new homes.

Hopefully this can secure the future of the British GP now and bring the Silverstone facilities upto standards set by the new Asian circuits and the new Spa facilities. Just one concern though - the new homes. We have seen how local residents nearly posponed the Italian GP a few years ago and we don't want the same happening to Silverstone after such an overhaul

Hopefully this will actually happen. We have heard so much about what is to happen, but it's all talk, no action so far.

Yeah, hopefully this will be a genuine investment and not just a statement designed to appease Bernie. He's not that stupid - ask Estoril.

What happened there? Was it a case of 'yeah Bernie we wil make upgrades but secretly we are just going to paint a few things'? i know they were thrown off the 1997 calendar for failing to upgrade safety facilities but never heard the whole story behind it

That's essentially it. Bernie had been having a go at Estoril for several years to upgrade their facilities and make safety-related changes, and they basically said, "Of course, Bernie, the developments will take some time but we're onto it." This went on for a couple of years before Bernie gave them an ultimatum when he placed them on the 1997 calendar. They did nothing and lost the GP. Since then the safety standards at Estoril rival nearly anywhere else in Europe, but it's too late: they have not been allowed back onto the calendar. Bernie sure knows how to hold a grudge!

Can't really see much in their plans for ordinary fans. Hotel, Science park pit and paddock facilities and new houses.
How about new facilities for the fans who can't afford grandstand tickets, cant' obtain pit and paddock passes.
This is nothing more than a corporate investment to make money from the sale of new houses and promote more corporate fuctions at the events.
Nothing for the die hard fans who stand out in the weather, queue for toilets for ages. And be ripped off with overpriced burgers.hotdogs and drinks at a race weekend

Will it save the British GP? Personally, I think Bernie will mess silverstone around even if they spent £100M. He hates silverstone because they won't let him in the BRDC, though he did give them noticably more trouble when JYS was president of the BRDC. may be they didn't get on.

Isn't it pretty much F1 drivers? Did Bernie ever drive in F1?

I think he attempted twice during the 1958 season to qualify. He failed to qualify for the Monaco and British GP then gave up on his racing career

The entry criteria to the Club remains very strict with full membership offered only to those ladies and gentlemen who have attained international success over a number of seasons. Associate membership is offered to those persons who have made a significant contribution to the sport and honorary membership is bestowed upon only a special few, including F1 World Champions who by dint of nationality do not otherwise qualify. Every British or Commonwealth World Champion is, or has been in their lifetime, a full member of the Club.
