There are a number of drivers in F1 who have followed in the footsteps of their famous fathers/brothers/uncles. Do you think they are there because of family support (both moral and financial support), the famous family name, or does petrol run in their veins?
How many cases are there where the 2nd generation has actually out performed their famous relations achievements?

The only one i can think of is JV junior out performing JV senior, he also technical out performed GV but i dont think any of us actually think JV was the better driver!

GV would have achieved more if he had not been killed. JV actually outstayed his welcome in F1. Damon Hill was never as successful as his father, though he was the first 2nd generation driver to win the WDC (I think, unless you count Alberto Ascari, though Antonio Ascari never raced in the WDC).

Possible future 2nd generationers? Nico Rosberg may out achieve his father if he gets ample opportunity, he certainly is talented enough.

That is my point whilst JV achieved more he could in no way be viewed as being the better racer, but he is probably the only example of the 2nd generation achieving more (at least that i can think of).

Apart from the Villeneuve trio, I can think of Hill, Andretti, Rosberg, Scheckter, and Lauda sons who are/were in motorsport. Who else have I missed?

Far too early to say for the likes of Nico Rosberg, Piquet Jnr and Bruno Senna. But of those 3, I think Senna will do the least in his career. He hasn't been all that impressive in GP2 this season.

I bet Marco will outperform Micheal Andretti when he gets to F1. Now overshadowing he grand father will be difficult.

I think it is probably part-genetic, part-upbringing. As the talent will be genetic but the desire to race will probably come from their being surrounded by racing from an early age.

Also, it is not only in F1 where you see recurring family names, these occur throughout motorsport at all levels and in varying capacities.

Wasn't Button senior a rally driver?

'Our Nige' has two sons apparently coming through the ranks, but they aren't supposed to be anything special. And there was also the Fittipaldi's and of course the Ascari's - one pre-F1 and one in F1

Has there ever been a time when father and son has ever raced against each other in F1? I know the Andrettis have raced each other in IndyCar, but can't think of an occassion when it has happened in F1

I think Marco could outshine his grandpappy in terms of race wins and points in F1, but as for winning more championships I doubt it. He definitely won't outshine him in IndyCar so F1 is his only opportunity to claim to be the best Andretti (I think after only a few tests he has been better in F1 than his dad was! <whistle> )

Yup, also don't forget not only was his dad a great racer, but his uncle was a touring car legend (Joe Winklehock).
