Autosport.com - Vettel replaces Speed at Toro Rosso

Sebastien Vettel will replace American Scott Speed at the Toro Rosso team from the Hungarian Grand Prix, the Italian outfit have confirmed.

Vettel was released from his contract with the BMW Sauber team earlier today, and he will join Toro Rosso for the remainder of the 2007 season.

Speed had said following the European Grand Prix that he would not race again with Toro Rosso following an altercation with team boss Franz Tost.

Expected but still a bit of a surprise. So that's two drivers in two races that have got sacked - who's next?

Furthermore, when asked by autosport.com if Speed will race in Budapest next week, Tost himself replied 'yes' unequivocally.

So a guaranteed 'no' then.....

Poop. I hope we don't have to wait another 10+ years for a Yank in F1.

Marco will find his way over in a few years' time - he's already been linked with Honda.

So another American at the back of the grid then.... <peek>

Then he can go back to champ car with his tail between his legs and win the series in a minardi.

I feel bad for Speed, he was put in a tough position and its good to see that he spoke his mind. STR are a joke of a team anyway hopefully someone with a bit of racing spirit will buy them and build their own cars

It's downright rude IMO to openly say who they are trying to sign for next season when they have 2 drivers who are/were doing their best for the team. Liuzzi and Speed seem to have no support, and tbh I can see Liuzzi being kicked out before the season has ended. Sad to see what used to be Minardi cause such an unnecessary stir.

Outside of the fight with Tost, I'm suprised it was Speed and not Liuzzi that was let go. Liuzzi's racing has been much worse than Scott's, with most of Scott's issues being from the car/tyre than his driving, versus Liuzzi's.

but STR shows that loyalty, logic and/or intelligence aren't needed in F1

Please explain TCG. Are you talking about Speed or Andretti?

Or just any of the inferior Americans? :)

STR have been fairly open about the fact that they didn't like either of their drivers that they had for this season - I think they were also clear that they favoured Liuzzi over Speed, if only just. I think Speed's altercation with Toast just about sealed it for Scott.

Speed had a good race at Monaco but not much else. Liuzzi was running 5th, soon to be 4th, at Canada before he binned it at the last chicane. They have been pretty even, i would say.

If memory serves, didn't they take ages to confirm Speed to the lineup at the start of the season?

Yep they did. Think they were stuck with him after failing to get anyone else

Has Bernie played a part in this do you think? Has he whispered in Gerhard's ear 'F1 isn't working in America at the minute. I'm getting rid of Indy so you don't have to keep that Yank anymore'
