2007 Drivers Kimi Raikkonen Felipe Massa 2007 stats Wins: 5 (Massa – 2, Raikkonen – 3) Podiums: 10 (Massa – 5, Raikkonen – 5) Poles: 5 (Massa – 4, Raikkonen – 1) Points: 103 (Massa – 51, Raikkonen – 52) TPL Team Rating- 8 Team Performance Overall Ferrari can be satisfied with their performance so far in 2007. They finished winter testing on top and carried this through to the first race in Australia, where they took a dominant win. They have also won in Bahrain, Spain, France and Britain. Without Ross Brawn and MS life was always going to be slightly more difficult but the new team structure has produced a very impressive and radical car with lots of impressive features including a long wheelbase. Despite good pace Ferrari will be disappointed that they haven't always made the most of their package so far this season, there have been the odd occassions where reliability or driver error has ment that there has been only one car on the podium when mclaren have got two on and getting more constructors points as a result. Also a problem with the wind tunnel around the North American races ment that development was slow and mclaren were ahead of them for a while but this new Ferrari team have shown the resilience of the old one and have fought back straight away once back in Europe. If Ferrari can keep things up and get both drivers on the podium regularly they have a chance of championship success but if they don't win it they will look back on a few of the problems they had in the first half of the season. Driver performance Felipe Massa- Massa is a much improved driver this year, his quali pace in particular has been very strong and he has had a few great pole positions. His race pace is also alot stronger and took strong pole to flag victories in Bahrain and Spain. Also he has been working tirelessly within the team and has built up a very strong rapport with them particularly with Michael Schumacher and this has contributed to his strong form. His knowledge of bridgestone tyres has been an advantage whereas others have suffered. However his irraticness and errors hasn't gone out the window completely, he had a very scruffy race in Malaysia and skipped the pit lane red light in Canada, these mistakes are likely to have lost him quite alot of points and he could regret this come the end of the year when it comes to deciding the championship. Kimi raikkonen- The first half of 2007 has seen mixed fortunes for the iceman. It all started with fireworks with a great win in Australia, however things went a little wrong after that as Massa started having the better of thing and Kimi making a couple of errors including being slow under the safety car in Bahrain and hitting the barrier in Monte-Carlo. Kimi has taken a long time to settle within the team and rumours go around that MS's prescence unsettles him. Another popular reason for this dip in form is Kimi's unease with the 2007 spec bridgestone tyres which have been hard for some drivers. After years of using Michelins this was always going to be a struggle. However recently the Iceman we all know and love has been returing. Ferrari have altered the setup of the car to suit him better and despite it taking a long time Kimi is now settling with the tyres. He has proved the critics wrong in France and Britain with two great wins. He now has an edge on Massa, if can continue to win races he could close on the championship although it could well be that he regrets the amount of time it took him to get used to the car and the team and the points which that could have lost him. |

8. They won't be satisfied with their performance because they are still 25 points or so behind Mclaren, with the faster car. |

7/10. They've taken a step sideways since last season, and when you consider what McLaren have managed in that time, that isn't really good enough if they want to be consistently winning titles over the next few years. Massa has been the more impressive of their two drivers overall and has hopefully silenced his critics (and he had many at the start of this season). Although he's made one error, in Malaysia, the rest of the time he really has driven beautifully, even under pressure, which shows he's matured a lot as a driver. He was unlucky in France and the UK to have had traffic and reliability issues respectively. I personally think his pace was good and he could have won both races. Raikkonen has finally hit top gear recently, and now he's done that I expect a close battle between the two for the rest of the season. The faster driver in the team tends to change depending on the circuit, so closely matched are they, so that willbe a battle to keep your eye on for the rest of this season and beyond. |
