Disclaimer: This is meant as HUMOR! Today, we in the US celebrate a National holiday. July the Fourth celebrates America's declaraton of independence from an opressive foreign monarchy. A foreign monarchy that expected fealty, taxable resources, religious conformance, and no representative form of government. The American patriots fought to establish representative government, the right of self-determination, and the right to tax ourselves to death. A special thanks to France who joined the fight, not for democratic ideals, but because the British defeated them in Canada and they were pissed off. A decade and a half later, France got their turn and rejected their monarchy as well. "let them eat cake," she said, and then they killed her. Liberté, égalité, fraternité or after the women's movement, sororité. We'll ignore the war of 1812 and the burning of the White House (still seems like a good idea), and recognize that we get on just fine now. It's nice to have the former Prime Minister, Mr. Blaire, as George Bush's lap dog for 6 years. Here Mr. Brown, here boy! I would like to think of the great American experiment as a great success, and for some of us it has been. But, having talked to many people, I'm convinced that it a work in progress and has many miles to go. Best of luck to your European Union. That constitution thing is hanging out there just waiting for your approval. Turkey is a great european state and will do you proud. Thanks, Arnold Benedict |

Happy Independence day to our US and A members. It's only fair that us Irish acknowledge it - after all the Americans hold St Paddys day parades while we just spend all day getting drunk!

To our credit, Bush is now the most unpopular President in US history among Americans. And, he didn't even have the majority of the direct vote either. |

...but despite everyone (allegedly) saying they wouldn't re-elect him...... they *did* Never mind, we've not done too well in the UK with our 'lapdogs' since Thatcher anyway....

True, he had 50.7%. But that is hardly a mandate, and he choose only to govern those people and not the other 49.3%. So, the idea that the USA is one big happy conservative, war mongering nation is hardly true. Not that anyone at TPL says that, but there are those who do elsewhere. |

From what I understand about American politics, it goes as follows: - If the President wins with more than 55% of the popular vote, he is said to have a "mandate." - If the President wins with less than 51% of the popular vote, he is said to "not care about having a mandate." |

The UK is no place to start talking about power without a mandate... with it's first past the post system and mainly 3 party politics... It is accurate to say that NO post war British Prime Minister has been elected with a majority mandate... ... it is only because the system affords a majority of seats in parliament on a 40% share of the vote that there are almost no coalitions. |
