The Italian maker has announced it shifted the first 500 limited versions of its exciting new supermini within two hours of putting them up for sale on the Internet.

Between 18 and 23 April, buyers could click on www.fiat500.com and reserve a car from the first batch to hit forecourts. But the website was swamped with thousands of applications from drivers wanting to be first to own the newcomer.

There are things in our past that should stay there and never return - like slavery, witch burning and that car!

retro is great... when you cant sell any cars currently.

All FIAT are doing is cheapening the image of a retro icon. It actually depresses me a little to see this happening. Shame on you FIAT.

Retro is fine if done well. If you have a proud heritage, why not play on it? The Beetle wasn't true to the original and looks rubbish. The Mini is different to the original but a fine car to drive and looks awesome, I say well done to BMW for creating something which is classy and yet classless - anyone can own one and look cool.

As for the Fiat 500, I think it looks awesome! I love the original and the new Abarth version should be great! Shame the original is LHD only or my other half would be buying one...

I think BMW approached the MINI as what If.... what if the classic mini had evolved naturally like the Golf, Mk1, Mk2, Mk3 etc so today a Mk5 Golf is vastly different from a Mk1 but you still know it's a Golf...

The FIAT 500 is more direct copying the style of the icon and in realitey the baby Fiat has evolved over the decades and the new Panda is a more direct decendant of the old 500....

that's how I see it.... but as a cheeky little citycar it should sell well..

True, John. I think there is obvious lineage and continuity from 500 to Panda, Golf to Golf Mk5, Mustang to Mustang, etc. The Mini, Beetle, Ford GT, 500 are all creating a new niche model based on another from the company's history so I consider them slightly different cases. I think it looks great!
