I used to love going out for a drive, now i get nausea just thinking about a medium length trip on unfamiliar roads. Not because i dont like the feel of driving a car, but its so stiffling. Speed camera,s everywhere, mobile ones in the gaps of the others. Traffic as soon as you get near the most tin pot town on the planet, expensive parking spaces so small each side of your car is touching the lines. I only like driving in Europe though thats changing now. What is the big deal about traffic being a few miles over the limit, accidents are accidents and will happen reversing at 3MPH or going at the speed limit. |

We don't have speed cameras in the US. We have some on traffic intersections, but that is relatively new. There are many bad things one can say about Americans, but we don't like big brother "in our face." Typically, one must be 8 to 10 MPH over the limit to attract attention. But, the US is a big place with relatively low density compared to Britain. |

8 to 10 miles over the limit to attract attention <drool> Here in the UK there is no such thing as discretion. We have every type of speed camera ever invented, so far i think around 7000 fixed sites and then on top of this are the mobile units. The average speed cameras in Nottingham will give you a ticket for being just ONE mile over the limit. The arguement given (and this isnt the sheriff of Nottingham) is that you must have been going quicker than 1MPH for some of the length of road to attract the 1MPH speeding ticket. Freinds have had tickets for between 1MPH to 6MPH over the limit. Here if you get caught you get 3 points on your licence depending on speed and 12 points gets you banned from driving. Over 100MPH can be an instant ban though a policeman 'testing out' his new car at 159MPH got let off by the courts. |

I enjoy public roads when it is quiet. When it is busy, they are just a pain in the arse. Also, the coppers make driving a pain. The only way you can get away with having a bit of fun is if you go out into the country on quite roads. Also, these are a few choice roads were it is very difficult to get caught for speeding (unless you are desparately unlucky), like the M621 western section near leeds. There is a 3 mile stretch from the M62 to the leeds ring road junction where you can see for miles and it is very hard to be spotted. |

And now the new up grades to existing cameras mean driving is like walking on egg shells. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml...20/nspeed20.xml

To be fair, most speed cameras are pretty visible, though that doesn't discount acciedntal slip ups. If I see a speed camera or speed camera signs, I just dont take the risk anymore. |

I take it you dont do much distance driving on unfamiliar roads?. Though a lot of camera's are visable, too many roads are not sign posted well enough to let you know if its 40mph or 30mph. And mobile units don't exactly let you know they are at the bottom of a steep hill catching all the motorists whos car went over the limit by the gravity of the descent. I only have to touch my accelorator and my car will bounce from 30mph to 40mph in an instant, eventually we will all get caught no matter how carefull you have driven for the last 10000 20000 or 50000 miles. Thus like i said 'walking on eggshells ever time you go on a trip'. I spend more time looking at my speedo driving in average speed camera entrapment areas such as Nottingham than i do the road, whether the cruise is set or not. I am not alone on having to drive like this and wonder what makes this over cautious driving safe? |

I do plenty of driving on unfamiliar roads. If you get done on a road where the speed limit is not adequately posted, you can have the case dismissed. There is a legal minimum standard of speed limit posting which all roads must adhere to. Also, all speed cameras and video vans must be clearly sign posted and video vans must not be parked illegally. Also, if the speed camera sign has a black boarder round it, it does not match the example in the highway code and is not a recognised sign, so you can get off that way as well. |

To be honest the roads are so full of traffic now that it really is not sensible to drive a car fast. I have seen so many friends and people i know killed because of speeding that i think we have to look at being more responsible nowadays. Look at the Gumball rally and how it looks like it will not happen again I really enjoy taking a car to its limit and i have been guilty of driving to the limits of a car on the main roads but i never did any stupid moves apart from going too fast. I LOVE cars and would do anything to own a real Supercar but to use any car on a main road to its max is just wrong in this day and age. Track days are the only way to now enjoy a car and take it to the limits as if you do overcook it your not taking someones life as well as your own. The friends i talked about were driving fast but out of 5 of then 3 were driving fast when another road user did not see them or did not predict they were going so fast. One died when a tractor was around a tight bend. Another when a guy came out of a side road. A mates wife when she was driving fast and tried to avoid a deer and hit a tree. They were married 2 weeks before the accident. The other 2 were just pushing the car too much and crashing. Drivers and passengers in the other cars died as well A waist of life because of speed on the public roads. My mate still drives too fast and he has had a terrible accident into a tree but he has not learned his lession and i am just waiting for the call from his parents like the rest of my friends. If you have a great car and it has a great performance just remember that its better to be in your house and have the car sitting in your drive where people can look at it and feel envious than the car sitting in a wreck yard and you in a grave. |

Who could disagree with it being wrong to max a car out on normal roads, but when speeding tickets are handed out for doing a couple of miles over the limit and more cameras and more sophisticated cameras are being built and used then you are at risk every time you drive. We have all seen mobile units in dodgy areas, over the top sites such as this one point some out, though they lose credence with their annoying anarchic rhetoric. http://makingsuccess.com/talivan.htm As much as you can contest dodgy fines, not all people caught this way know what to do or can afford what to do if the complaint is defended. I know of only one person who has never gone over a speed limit. He is an old neighbour of my parents I have known since I was a child. He buys a brand new car every 18 months to two years and will do at least 10 to 15 MPH under the limit whatever road he is on. And yet he has had minor accidents with almost every car that were all his own fault. The last one he hit a parked car on an empty street because the sun got in his eyes! |

Yeah i totally agree with you on being just over the speed limit. There are old people who come into the shop who can hardly walk but they can still drive a car I am sure this is not correct as they must be a terrible hazard to other drivers but their insurance is cheap It is a shame however as alot of these eldery people rely on their cars to be able to lead a normal life and taking this away is cruel but something has to be done. |

It sounds like your friend should question whether he should be driving at all. Anyone that is so bad at driving that they have to drive at a snails pace and STILL crashes was obviously not made for the public road. |

YEP. I have been in a long line of traffic on my way to my parents house and guessed straight away it was him holding everyone up. As i turn onto the avenue much later than he has, there he is taking each speed bump as though he had fragile explosives on his passenger seat. But he pays for his minor accidents as they usually just involve him and stationery objects like bollards and pavements and walls and .......you get it, he never speeds and other than the stationary car he hit last time he is beneath the police radar for bad drivers. |
