Anyone know any good motoring myths or pearls of wisdom that have turned out not to be true?

Like - Redex really does make your car perform better (not measurably).

Or

If you drive past a speed camera on the wrong side of the road, it won't trigger (yes it will).

Anyone got any more?

And if you're on a bike, unless it's very distinctive, they can't even find you to tell you off because it won;t have a forward facing plate. Not that the speed would be accurate, but you can bet they'd like to try and scare you....

Splitfire sparkplugs. In America, they are banned from claiming that they give you extra go-go and use less fuel than your old plugs. Of course they do, a new set of the old type would do the same, because when they're old, they're less efficient anyway. It's a bit like saying your new lightbulb is 100% brighter than the old one - because it blew!

A classic one this. Apparenty this is how to avoid getting points if you get done for speeding:

If you send a cheque for more than the amount of the fine, the issuing authority has to refund the difference. If you don't cash the cheque they send back, they can't add the points to your license because the full transaction isn't complete. Because of their heavy workload pressures, they don't pursue the matter, so you avoid the penalty.

yeah right <doh>

Here's another good one: -

Induction kits make a noticable change in performance on your car.
(may be on a high performance car at high speed, but at 50 MPH, in a nova, on leeds ring road??????)
