If I had any of those cars, I wouldn't be putting all those stickers on them!

Brock Yates wrote about the real cannonball in either Road & Track magazine or Car & Driver in the 1970's, I can't remember which.

There were no rules except that the vehicle had to be street legal. They left a discrete NYC warehouse around midnight at timed intervals, choose their own ride, route, and strategy. It was very secretive.

Radar detectors were just invented and sympathetic teams kept in touch via CB radio. The effective range was limited and there were no cell phones.

One team was the EZ Wider team. Yes, the ganga skins. It was composed of four guys, a stretched ford econoline van, a 100 gallon add-on fuel tank, 1 pound of prime herb, and a 55 gallon barrel of potato chips. They finished in the pack, in about 53 hours, but took a trip and never left the farm.

I loved reading about these outlaws who drove across America in fast cars with only one agenda, to get to LA first.

In case no one's noticed, the Gumball 3000 has been canceled this year after one of the drivers smashed into a local and killed him.

Then they ran away, got picked up by another competitor and was later arrested at the border.

Or something like that.

Yes... This car driven by Nick Morley and Co driver Matthew McConville was involved in an accident with a locals VW Golf... the Porsche was said to have veered on to the wrong side of the road and struck the other car.

The pair where said to have leapt into another Gumball 3000 entrants car and haded for the Albanian border where they where stopped and arrested.

The 67 year old driver of the Golf suffered a heart attack en route to the hospital and his wife is in a critical condition.

Morley has been remanded in custody for 30 days and could face 12 months in Jail for leaving the scene of an accident.

According to the paper I read this morning the organiser's maintain the car was within the speed limit however the locals say differently. McConville has been released as I believe he was detained as well but as previously said Morley is till in custody.

The organisers say they left the scene of the accident as they were in shock and returned 20 mins later.

The passenger of the golf has died apparently. The gumballers are now in serious problems!

This by the way was what was left of the porsche in question. There's another pic showing the golf as well, nothing gory, but I'm not going to post it here. find it yourselves!
