I shall be wearing a black armband this week. I sold my '54 Beetle, now that I'm heading back to the UK. The guy who bought it has promised to look after her. :(

Aw mate, that's sad news - but look at the bright side, someone else can enjoy her now!

Dude, buy it back and ship it to Louisiana. I have a 1600 square foot shop we can keep it in!

I hate to get rid of any car especially a classic. I destroyed a 1978 911SC in a road car crash in 1998. The car had been in perfect shape! <yikes>

I have to ask why on earth Ghost is coming back to the UK - most people I know are trying to leave!

I hope the guy who bought her is going to send regular pictures so that you know he really is looking after her, Ghost.

Even better, have it shipped here - it does cost £1000 and take a week though, but because it's a classic, it should be relatively easy to import it.

hey, thanks for the moral support everyone :D

from brazil to the uk i couldn`t get a quote under $2,500 and that puts it's cost way over it's sentimental value (when you factor in what the missus thinks it's worth :) )

my photos cunningly disguise the fact that every panel is bent, corroded and was badly welded before i got my hands on it. we did a quick blow over to get the colour good and drove it as is. it's value is not so high, but the bashed up beater of a body gave it a lot of personality... a hard life well weathered.

the new owner is going to do a full resto and will send me photos and keep in touch.

it's funny being told people are wanting to leave the uk... that's all anyone says about brazil !

does anyone know a country where people are rushing to get IN ??

i'll be doing a cabinet making course in devon for a year and then see where's the right place to open a workshop, might not be england if i find the locals still wind me up !

in the mean time thanks for the janx, and i'll ponder what collection of cars should be filling up that workshop in louisiana...

According to the rest of the world, the USA is a horrible evil empire forcing its will on people all over the world. I don't disagree with that sentiment. I think we shoud mind our own business.

However, if you are here, it is a great place to be. In spite of gun violence and everything else, people are rushing in to be here.

This has been the melting pot where all cultures become "Americans." However, this in-rush probably will erode the "melting" and we will become a nation of sects, religions, and former national identities that no longer have an "American" flavor.

But, I still would love to have a battered '55 Bug.

Peace and Love

Well if the British media is to believed....

every single citizen of the new EU member states is lined up across the channel to get into the UK...

To most people that would be over exaggerating but to the Sun/Star/Mirror it is fact... <no>

Here's an interesting point, and not too controversial I hope, but there are people hoping to get into countries like the UK and US because their own countries are in a poor state, comparatively, like in parts of Central and South America and Eastern Europe, parts of the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

So where do people from the US and the UK go, not to retire, but for a better quality of life ?

I can think of Australia and New Zealand. Language issues seem to crop up anywhere else, though there are huge communities of Brits in Spain and Southern France. There's Canada too, but I don't hear of many people heading there. South Africa requires, still, a certain amount of bravery.

The choice seems pretty thin if you really want a better life than you can get in the US or the UK.

a battered car is a used and enjoyed car

a prestine car is a unused car which no one has enjoyed.

Which is the better?

a battered car is a used and enjoyed car

depends whether it was used and enjoyed by it's owner, or whether it's batteredness is due to a bunch of bored youths, getting their enjoyment with a crow bar. <unsure>
