Most American brands look pretty awful, but most cars SOLD in America are not American brands. Plenty of Japanese Lexus, German Mercs, BMW's, Audi's etc. One of the best looking American brands is the Ford Jaguar (warmed over Mondeo). By the way, is it the BMW Rolls Royce, the Ford Volvo, the Ford Mazda, the Damlier/Chrysler (Dodge) etc? |

No... just as with any other product... these are separate Brands owned under an umbrella parent company. Mercedes, Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep are brands owned by Daimler-Chrysler Group. BMW, Rolls-Royce and MINI (and Riley and Triumph) are all brands within the BMW Group... etc Who ultimately owns what is only a tool to use in arguments for petty point scoring.. A British person should be proud of Rolls-Royce and MINI... they are British marques first and foremost... they just happen to be (for now) owned by a German company Nissan is seen as Japanese the world over but is part of the French Renault Group Lamborghini is forever Italian.... but run under the guidance of Audi who in turn are a part of the V.A.G... and even the V.A.G. themselves are part owned by Porsche A.G. In the UK Vauxhall is a British Marque but has been part of the 'General' for over 80 years The list goes on...... |

Incidentally, BMW also own Austin Heally Ford, oddly enough owns Rover, but not the rights to the designs - so they could in theory bring out a car with the rover badge and name rover but not a previous MG Rover design... Rover Badged Jag XJ anyone? |

Sorry STIG, Not so Austin-Healey founded 1952. Austin bought the rights to Donald Healey's sportscar in 1952 it created the new name... but after 18 years BL in a cost cutting exercise decided to drop the name so as not to pay Healey any royalties for his name. The Healey family retained the rights to the name until last year when the Healey half of the trademark was sold to Tim Fenna who has plans to revive the Healey name using the now defunct SMART roadster as a base... Austin founded 1905 became part of BMC then BL and finally was dropped when the Rover Group was formed... Although BMW acquired ownership in 1994 it passed to the MG Rover company in 2000... it was included in the sale of assets to Nanjing Automobile Corporation from the MG Rover Liquidators in 2005 Rover founded in 1904 was retained by BMW when the company was sold in 2000, but it licenced the rights to the badge back to MG Rover so production could continue at Longbridge. after the collapse of MG Rover the rights returned back to BMW. When Ford bought Land Rover from BMW they had first refusal on the rights to the Rover name should BMW ever sell... that happened this year but Ford only intended to protect it's Land Rover brand and have no plans to ever use the Rover name. MG founded 1923. Cecil Kimber created the MG legend at the Oxford branch of Morris Garages. they became part of BMC in 1952 and like Austin that became part of BL in 1968 and finally Rover Group in 1986. It became part of Nanjing Automobile Corporation after MG Rovers bankruptcy in 2005 and is now as in the lead story above read to be launched again... They are also planning to relaunch the TF but according to Nanjing the initials now stand for Modern Gentleman...

Another clever move by BL to save money was the Mini Clubman... the 1275GT was so called because BL had to pay John Cooper £1 for every car sold... BL saw that by renaming the car the 1275GT they saved £1 on every car sold....
