Impressed as I am by the assistance that has been given in other posts I am here to ask for help in buying the next Ghostmobile. I'm heading to the UK in May, as an ancient student, studying cabinet making in Devon for a year. As a notorious skinflint I have allocated a budget of 2k, that's right TWO THOUSAND POUNDS. Pretty damn impressive I know. I plan to live about 15 miles of A and B raods away from the college, and, as an old race hack (me not the car) I need something that'll cover the ground, shall we say, entertainingly. My short list would be something like: Peugeot 205 Peugeot 106 Mini 1.3i Citroen Saxo VTS Jag XJ6 Mercedes 450 SEL ! ![]() NASCAR Rolls Royce Silver Cloud Alternatively, I have an old track day 325i sitting in France that will have to wait unless anyone knows an insurance company who's rates are sensible for a car with a roll cage... What else is out there ? I am hoping for serious and ridiculous ideas |

Avoid anything British i.e a mini. Try and get something small and good on gas, a VW polo is always a good bet, a Nissan Micra is an awesome vehicle as a runabout and the build quality is first class < and I should know!!!! |

106 is nice, but get one with the 1.4 or higher engine. 205s are a hoot to drive. either a 1.6 or a 1.9 (which may kill you). or if you find one, a XS (1.4) |

fair enough, but doesn't the micra handle like poo ? if it can't deal with the twisty stuff without quaking it won't do. and on mini turbos... http://videos.streetfire.net/video/fdd0928...45b43be719a.htm polo could be interesting, if i can get one with some power,

An older Ford Puma. I used to have one (well bought it for the missus and kept nicking it) because it was riot on the twisty stuff. a 1.7 though. 1.4 feels likes it's lost its guts. |

that's an interesting idea, completely forgot about pumas, remember they had an excellent reputation for handling. pretty rare though, right. i'll certainly add that to the list of huntable cars, cheers ! |

youre not going to get anything hot for 2k. I gave you boring but sensible choices....and remember that not only do you have high gas prices, but insurance is a pig for anything the boy races will want to nick off your drive. |

i hear you. i'm hoping that being (whisper it) 40, and living in (whisper it even quieter) devon should keep the premiums down. i got a web quote of 286 quid for a wrx so am not too worried about the silliness of the car, insurance-wise, so much as the cost of keeping the damn thing on the road... that and, as you say, petrol

less prone to lift off oversteer and quicker/bigger/better though I did love my 205 from way back..... I near got a Clio Williams. They are fantastic, but the driving position is terrible and have specific parts to them that are incredibly hard to source and expensive. Elusive Jim had one and he can tell you a few horror stories... |
