Cape Town GP project announced

Yet another country queuing up to join the F1 circus. I actually agree with this one as Africa is the only continent (not counting Anartica - now that would be something!) that currently doesn't have a GP. As long as they create a decent circuit and keep Tilke away from it, it will be a welcome addition to F1

They should use the Durban street circuit that A1GP use. Seeing the cars blast around the streets is brilliant, especially when you can see ordinary road cars trundling around in the same shot, just over a fence!

It would be brilliant if they would use the street circuit at Durban. So far it has produced very exciting races during A1GP's 2 visits there and with the beach backing onto the paddock it has great scenery. But I have a feeling it could be too narrow for F1, especially the end section after Turn 9

I hate to keep on disagreeing with you today Andy, but I would hate them to use the A1GP circuit. Its too tight and twisty and offers no overtaking spots. The Team GB car managed to hold on to 2nd spot at the SA A1GP despite the New Zealand car behind showing that it was considerably quicker.
What is wrong with Kyalami for a South African GP? Its been a while since it was last there (85 was the last SAGP I think), but surely it can be brought up to standard. And I am sure there is a lot less crime at Kyalami than Cape Town – god help the pit crews if any are from Somalia!
You can just imagine it, Alonso comes in for a pit stop and some street gang member sticks a gun to his head and demand he hands over his cell phone and wallet!

Yeah, I can see that the Durban circuit wouldn't offer much in the way of overtaking for F1. Although you could say that about some F1 circuits (such as Montreal), yet they still provide good racing.

By the way, the article in the OP says that the last Kyalami GP was in 1993, and I seem to remember some talk of it returning for '98, although that obviously never happened. Didn't Kyalami undergo quite a lot of renovation and lose most of its best bits? Although it would probably still be preferable to anything that came off the drawing board of a certain Mr. Tilke....

The last GP at Kyalami was in 1993. The problem with Kyalami is that the new circuit is pants. Overtaking opportunities are limited, and the spectator views are very limited. I was at the 1992 GP, and my grandstand seats gave a view of only one corner. I watched the 1993 race on TV as a result (good battle between Senna and Prost, as I recall).

The new Kyalami is boring, there is nothing interesting about it. I'm sure Tilke could design a track where cars can overtake, but why not find someone else to design the track? It's pointless getting the same person to design every track because they are all the same!

I agree with SAFCFan. I think we're all a bit tired of switchback corners and concrete run-off.
