Right, no But bash. I like Button and hope the Honda gives him a decent platform to perform. I like JV and wished him success in F1. I've always hoped that US open wheel racing would provide an alternative to the European junior series and feed into F1. But, M. Andretti, Zanardi, Villeneuve, Montoya have had a very mixed result.

Saint, you made a good comment about personality yesterday. I think JV is interesting, but sometimes annoying. But, I always read his comments and sometimes wish that other drivers would annoy me with theirs.

Schumacher (Michael) just had to show his face on TV to annoy me!

Does anyone actually read what Villeneuve says, or do you all just follow a pre-determined agenda?

True enough, Kubica put in a good performance at Monza, but elsewhere he was making rookie errors all over the place. Do you think that BAR's improvement in 2004 and BMW's towards the end of last year was due purely to Jacques leaving the team(s)? Its just bad timing, admittedly brought upon himself by falling out with key people at the wrong time. Nothing to do with bad driving - in fact he seemed to be doing ok this year generally.

I've said this on another thread, so sorry if I'm repeating myself, but Jacques and Button were pretty evenly matched during 2003; Jenson came out on top overall, but not by much. Its hard to evaluate when Jacques car packed up on him in half of the races anyway.

Its all very well saying that anyone could have won in his car in '97, but where was Frentzen, and why didn't all those other geniuses (genii?) find themselves at Williams? Besides, the vastly over-rated Mika Hakkinen only won in '98 because his car was head and shoulders above everyone else's, and in '99 he was even less convincing. Its all in the timing - if you get that right, finishing the job is all you have to do, and that's what Villeneuve did.

Yes I do. I think his Kubica comments are a little odd, as rookies do make mistakes. As you say, rookie errors. I remember Alonso making them in 2001, Kimi as well, and there are many other examples.

JV may have been doing ok last season...but is ok good enough for an ambitious team? Heidfeld was in the comfort zone, evident because his form picked up dramatically once Kubica was there.

And if you want to say that Hakkinen is vastly overrated, then fine. Just wondering how you manage to jump to that conclusion. He comprehensively beat DC in 1998 and 1999. Sure he wasn't perfect, but he was bloody fast.

It's ok, I'm just trying to get a bit of balance in here.

I don't disagree with anything you say re. Kubica, but this was simply Jacques answering questions honestly. I don't think he's said anything particularly controversial. In fact I disagree with his contention that Massa will come out on top at Ferrari, but I understand his reasons for thinking that.

And no, 'ok' probably wasn't good enough considering his 'former world champion' tag, so his current predicament is of his own making. But that doesn't disqualify him from voicing his opinion, after all he's raced against all these people so his opinions are surely more valid than ours.

With regard to Hakkinen, although that's going off at a tangent, I have a few reasons:
1) He is revered for outqualifying Senna at the first attempt in 1993, but both de Angelis and Berger did likewise, and they're not rated in the same bracket. In the remaining time they spent as team-mates, Senna was streets ahead.

2) His first two GP wins were gifted to him by Coulthard, and prior to '98 there wasn't much between DC and Mika, and I don't rate DC.

3) You couldn't separate Hakkinen and Herbert with a cigarette paper at Lotus, but where's Johnny when all the 'greats' are mentioned.

4) He struggled to beat Irvine in '99, and made loads of errors. Its clear that he wouldn't have held a candle to Schumacher in the second half of the year. If anything, the star drivers of '99 were Frentzen and Ralf Schumacher (!)

5) Williams had the option to sign him for '93, but chose Damon Hill. Why would they do that?

Hakkinen was a good, quick driver who got lucky. Same as Damon, Jacques etc. I simply don't rate him on a par with the likes of Schumacher, Senna or Prost.

That sounds very good, only spoiled by your miss-spelling of sarcasm earlier and a couple of things here!

Just joshing with you mate, please don’t take offence!

Peace be with you all!

Yes, platitudinous: "A trite or banal remark, especially as if it's original or significant"

Thanks for the edit. I must slow down.

Sorry - I'm in a bit of a pompous, smart-arse mood tonight. Just ignore it.
