Who would be the best champion for F1 in 2007?

Which driver would F1 benefit from most being champion at the end of 2007?

Bernie seems to think that Alonso isn't that a great champion for F1 and would probably moan about it if he won it again this year but who do you think he wants to win it? Massa maybe? Bernie has often said that he thinks Button would make a great champion.

Personnally I don't think it matters who is champion as long as it is a close fight, that will benefit F1 the most and I think we should definitely get that this year.

And another question, Will the fact that MS has retired attract more of the armchair viewers back to Formula 1 who stopped watching when he was always winning and never went back?

I do think that audience figures in many countries will rise this year

I seem to recall saying that in 2004. I also seem to remember predicting a close battle for 2005, and a four-team battle in 2006. Frankly I've given up hoping for a close championship race because the last time I can remember a decent one was 1999 (and even that was thanks to extenuating circumstances, i.e. Schumi breaking his leg.)

I don't know if it will increase audience figures, but it will make it more interesting for the fans. There is now a big Michael Schumacher-shaped hole at the pinnacle of F1, and no shortage of drivers looking to fill it (Alonso and Raikkonen, with maybe Kubica, Kovalainen and possibly Hamilton in coming years). The next few seasons will be interesting as we will see who rises to fill MS's shoes.

Button would do it for me.

But I think Hamilton would be the best for F1 to hype, a Tiger Woods story in the making.

But he is also driving a British car, and I don't think 100 Million Japanese give a crap about a Tiger Woods story.

For viewing figures, Button, England hasn't had a champ in 10 years, and a Honda winning the WDC as it's own brand would be huge in Japan (just like Godzilla)

Or maybe Truli in the Toyota, an Italian with a Japanese car.

Lewis Hamilton would bring a whole new audience to the sport which would be a great thing. As the Saint says, because he is so young talented and hyped you would get the whole "Tiger" effect happening!

No. First he needs a season or two of heartbreak, perhaps a Mansellesque tyre failure in the last race before finally overcoming all the odds and claiming the prize which is his birthright ......

a Tiger Woods story in the making.

Im sure he wasnt racially abused asmuch as Tiger which makes his dominance so amazing (ultimate sportsman) <bow> , and i think Lewis one day might well be in the same bracket in terms of sporting superstars.

I have Tiger Woods autograph :D

Alas being an old fart has given me access to people no longer doing the rounds.

I shook Dianas hand and spoke a few words with her (she opened a charity center I was helping at), I gave Mr Bean a demonstration of one of our Fanuc robots at Nissan, I have arm wrestled with Geoff Capes (I lost) to name a few, I have been bowled at by Ian Botham, and got drunk with a LOT of famous cricketers (and have pics to prove it). I have met a lot of F1 stars at the GP's and be told to bugger off by Dickie Bird!

I have had a few rather interesting things happened in my life, but it makes me sound like a bit of a Billy Liar!

But if you ever meet Peter Martin (the bowler) in the streets of Yorkshire/Lancashire, ask him about the time he almost got banned from the clubhouse at Durham CCC whilst drinking with the guy who was in charge of corporate security in their inaugural 1st class season.

Or for you guys in Australia, if you ever bump into Dean Jones, ask him if he remembers the guy he used to call 'Big Fella' (don’t think he knows my real name)when he was at Durham. Also try to get to meet his wife, she is a real looker!
