Michael Schumacher has been offered the chance to test a NASCAR after saying he could not see what attracted former rival Juan Pablo Montoya to the American series.

The retired legend admitted he was bewildered by the appeal of America’s most popular form of motorsport following the Colombian’s shock defection to the series last year.

“Personally I wouldn’t do it,” he said at Magny-Cours last July.

“What do you do in NASCAR? What is exciting there?

“I can’t see that, running around on ovals.”

But the seven-time world champion has now been given an open invitation to take part in a NASCAR test himself by team owner Ray Evernham in a bid to get him to reconsider his views.

And the American is confident that if Schumacher was to test one of the stock cars he would enjoy the experience.

"I'll put him in a red car, a real good car, any time he wants to come over here and try it," he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.

"A lot has changed in recent years.

“These cars are looked on as much more sophisticated than they used to be.

“I think he'd find them technical enough to keep him happy."

I so hope he takes it up. Its about time he experienced a proper racing car.

I think he should take them up on it too, he'd have a lot of fun hammering those old jalopies around!

Ok, Ok, I know the cars are not jalopies .... they just look that way.

Doh! Sorry again, I just can't take American racing seriously.

Honestly though, I think he would have a great time and he should go for it! What has he got to lose?

Rubbing IS racing right? ;-)

He doesn't like NASCAR. Nothing wrong with that. If you have raced on proper tracks all your life, and been bloody good at it, it's no surprise he thinks NASCAR is dull.

Legacy? Do you think that he is so far up himself that it would stop him having some fun?

NASCAR cars may not be F1 cars but I'll bet they're still giggle tho!

If Michael enjoys driving fast cars then he would have a great time! It really wouldn't matter what he was racing. He was karting recently so he obviously does enjoy it.

Valentino Rossi was not afraid to try F1 cars or Rally cars, so why shouldn't Michael try NASCAR. He had a go at WRC once I think?

Areed, why would the guy who holds the resord for most wins at Spa, Monza, Suzuka, and I'm sure a few other good tracks, want to drive in a circle for 3 hours?

Pretty much he said he isnt interested in the past so i dont see why he would change his mind about driving round in circles driving an updated road car.

Because it is different.

And it might be fun!

The Americans are at their best when 'entertaining', they'd bend over backwards to give him loads of respect and make sure he had a good time.

It would be a great day out.

I hope when I'm retired somebody makes me an offer like that!

exactly, surely he would only be remotely tempted if there was silly money involved but he isn't David Beckham so I am sure it won't pull him. He hasn't accpeted a test he has just been offered or thats what has been reported anyway, just a publicity stunt perhaps?
