I'm not sure really...Hakkinen threw 2 wins away, at San Marino and Monaco, both mistakes he shouldn't really have made. Throw in a few reliability issues and it should really have been more comfortable for Hakkinen. Oh, and DC did his very best to allow Irvine back in :P

Not that this is related...but F1 needs the battles of 1998-2000 more often :) They were good years!

He also through away a certain win in Monza when he spun out from the lead. Imagine Eddie Irvine as a world champ, no fastest laps or poles and a few fortuitous victories.

He was also blitzed at Malaysia by Schu...1.1 seconds in quali? Says it all. The fact that Irvine was hopeless at Jaguar showed that he wasn't that good.

I know we as posters have had many top drivers polls, conversations, ect. and we all know who the top 4 usually are (Shumi, Senna, Clark, and Fangio) so for this thread, who are the top 10 drivers, who are no longer in F1, not named Shumi, Senna, Clark, or Fangio.

1. Ascari
2. Stewart
3. Prost
4. Lauda
5. Mansell
6. Andretti
7. G. Hill
8. Brabham
9. Moss
10. Piquet

i'd always put prost ahead of senna. no question

Several people do, and to be honest I probably should have rated him higher as well. I'm not how many people know, but if all 16 races counted in 88, Prost not Senna would have been WDC 105 to 94.

I think the main reason for Prost's low ratings is his lack of skill in the rain.

Good points there Rob. I did know about the 88 title, and Prost was actually considered a bit of rain master in the first few years of his F1 carreer. Its all down to personal opinion i guess, and upbringing is a key factor in why i believe Prost to be higher than Senna. Lol. my dad coudltn stadn Senna, but was a big Prost fan

Lets look at the generally accepted 'eras' in the history of the championship, ie who were the benchmark drivers at any given time:

1950-58; Fangio
1958-62; Moss
1962-68; Clark
1968-73; Stewart
1974-82; debatably Lauda, although most difficult era to judge
1983-88; Prost
1988-94; Senna
1994-2006; Schumacher

There are a few overlaps, but that's how I see it, which puts Moss, Stewart, Lauda and Prost in my list. I'd also add Ascari, Brabham, Surtees, Fittipaldi, G Villeneuve and Mansell. Can't put them in any order because I didn't see them all race, and they all have different qualities that make them great.

It’s always the difficulty when compiling your list. For drivers in the 60's and 70's I have to rely on other peoples opinions, as I never saw them race myself. That’s why I feel comfortable in the late 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 21st century, I watched em all!
