I think it would have been a much better idea as well for Midland to have secured their supply for this season rather than de-tuned ferrari engines.

thoughts?

I bet they are not de-tuned.

Why go to the expense of de-tuning them?

Well they (redbull last season) werent getting the latest ones thats for sure the ferrai have 10 kph down on it and thats not all aero efficiency.

Really? I seem to recall a lot of people compaining about Ferrari's straight line speed last year... <whistle>

Huh? im talking about the difference in straight line speed between the redbull and ferrari who were supposed to be using the same spec engines but obviously werent, but the ferrari was always at the top of the speed trap while the redbull was usually near the bottom.

And if you recall a lot of people were saying that was because of Ferrari's "flexi wing" anyway there is a lot more than just engine grunt that affects straight line speed, the ability to get on the throttle as soon as possible through the corner, apex speed, lack of drag, high speed stability, rear wheel grip, plus the braking abilities of the car since the car that brakes later will have a higher top speed. I'm willing to bet that the 06 Ferrari was better than the Red Bull in pretty much every way.

Yes but that doesnt always mean its quick in a straight line, look at the 2000 ferrari..brilliant car but poor straight line speed. I dont think that the chassis would have made such a massive difference, who knows :D

Now that I am a bit more awake I remember that Gerhard was rather unhappy that Torro Rosso might have to use Ferrari engines. I vaguely remember him saying that "nobody has ever won a race using a customer Ferrari engine".

So perhaps they are detuned. Or at least, not the latest version.

I believe that Adrian was very keen for Red Bull to switch to Renault engines. Probably every bit as as keen as Gerhard was for them not to.

<thumbs> Now your talking

Well I know they didn't win a race, but Sauber did pretty well in 01-04, beating every Cosworth powered team in each year....

Accept 03 where their car was crap bar one flukey wet race, yea they did do well and were very quick through the speed traps but redbull wasnt an allay like sauber were and if redbull got the chance they wouldnt think twice about beating ferrari unlike sauber.

But still won at Spa, Monza, Hockenheim (ok it was raining), Indy, and Sepang. All tracks where top speed is a good thing to have.

Oh yeah, <doh>

Well back to topic on hand, I don't think Ferrari would take the time to de-tune an engine that they were sending to inferior competition, but I don't think Red Bull got the latest development as soon as they came out either.

On the whole, not having Cosworth in F1 does kinda suck, but that is simply life sometimes. All in all I'd rather have the Lotus name back that Cosie. .

Oh God Yes! I didn't realise that was the choice but Lotus get my vote every time.

So sorry dear old Cosworth, I do love you too, just not as much as I love Lotus.

Would you rather see them trudge around at the back as they did in the final years?

I'd hope that the likes of Williams would sell out before that happened on a regular occurrence.

Since 1967 all F1 Lotus cars used the DFV Cosworth engine.

No, of course not! I had a slightly more romantic vision than that.

A white knight to rescue Lotus and slay the evil old dragon that is Flavio Briatore!

To more pragmatic subjects:

Frank will never quit. Honestly, and I really don't mean to be horrible, what else would he do with his time?

Just as soon as the major manufacturers get bored of lobbing money hand over fist into F1 for little return (and they will; just look at WRC) then Frank will be poised to play his master-stroke and again rise to dominance!

It's just a matter of time. Really!

And besides, the 2008 Concorde agreement will return more money back to the teams so if Formula 1 continues along it's cost-cutting path the extra money from the manfacturers will not be so important.

Of course, Formula 1 will be ruined by then, but that is another story!
