Sounds like the central locking actuator or solenoid is on the blink Sheila.
It's sometimes possible to free them up manually but a replacement is usually the order of the day.
It's always hard to pin these problems down without the use of my trusty multi meter and diagnostic gubbins but your local garage will confirm or deny my suspicions.

Right that'll be £45 plus VAT <whistle>

Well an update upon my problem...

I actually helped to change my mate's Alternator belt this weekend (he'd driven up to meet me at a motorhome garage where my support vehicle was being serviced - and arrived sans belt du altanator

No, we don't know where it went. Just gone. totally. poof. gone.

Anyway, to cut it short, we bumped into one of the mechanics there and he told us that to check the tension, try and twist the belt - if you can twist it 90 degrees it's up to tension, over 90 and it's too loose and under 90 and it's too tight.

Prehaps Sir Oaf would like to confirm that that is correct?

Assuming the laws of physics are still working, it'll be somewhere in the road (or close to it) between the last place is was known to be attached and the place it was discovered to be missing.......

Yeah the old twist test is a pretty good rule of thumb method mate.
However as I'm a highly skilled and unbelievably good looking technician I unfailingly apply a spring balance between the alt and crankshaft pulley on the belts upper run and ensure that the deflection is correct at 10kg.
And if you believe that you'll believe anything squire <thumbs>

Right. tried the twist test, and I couldn't get it to 90 degrees. Thus I figure it's too tight. although why that should cause it to make a load of noise is beyond me.

Now I just need to jack the car up and adjust it.

If the belt is too tight, the tension will be trying to pull the two pulleys towards each other. it's possible that this could deflect the pulleys ever-so-slightly, causing the belt to run on the edge....?

Right, latest problem - My winscreen wipers seem to have developed a habit of stopping wher ethey're not supposed to.

Oddly enough, bashing the steering wheel seems to pursuade them to keep moving.

Looks like it could be the switch... Hopefully this is in an easy place to get to and doens't cost much.

No, it'll be a bastic to remove, and cost a fortune. Assuming the switch is in the stalk, it's normally an all or nothing job - ie you'll have to replace the whole flipping thing. Look on eBay or at a breakers......

unless it's a relay...

Switch isn't in the stalk ( it is controlled by the stalk, but isn't actually in it)
