Twenty-two teams have submitted entry applications for the 2008 Formula 1 world championship, the FIA revealed on Friday.

With only 12 slots available, 10 applications will be rejected.

“The FIA has received applications from 22 teams wishing to compete in the 2008 FIA Formula One World Championship,” the governing body said in a statement.

“All applicants have been invited to a meeting in London on April 10, 2006.”

Among the applicants are all 11 existing teams, former Minardi owner Paul Stoddart and former BAR and Benetton boss David Richards.

Exactly what I was thinking; I wonder who's come out of the woodwork?!?!

It's certainly gonna upset the applecart when the 12 are annouced. there's gonna be some serious politics happening!

I wonder if there's a mix of the regulars plus their 'b' teams too both existing and potential, just to follow on from the latest fad of running yourself twice ?

The plot thickens

Sadly, while that would be good to see, only 12 teams are allowed as the pits can't cope on some tracks. Odd that some of those track were on the calender when 26, 30, 36, 40 cars turned up, like Spa, Imola, Silverstone, Hockenheim, to name just a few... <blink>

Would the FIA kick out any of the teams that attempted to break away?

I don't see the logic in only allowing 12 teams to take part. I would like the idea of prequalifying again. I don't know how each team could get their own pit space, in fact it would be impossible, but assuming the current 11 stay in, that leaves one team. How do they choose which one?

They need to ban any #2 team.

Also, if Nascar can get by with 43 pit stalls at Indy, what's FIA's problem???

I agree, no 'B' teams. It will obviously cause team tactics which affects races, and besides at this rate Red Bull will end up owning 60% of the F1 teams. <no>

Also politics then plays too big a part in deciding who gets F1 drives as teams will just bring through their junior drivers and the best young drivers will not get into F1 for sure.

If teams want B teams they can run them in GP2 for me. I hate STR and everything they stand for, especially since they removed Minardi from F1.

And most of the track host either LMES or FIA GT races, which have 40+ cars at times. I don't think garage space is a problem really

44 cars, eh?

Lets hope they bring back Spa. I'd love to see 44 cars try to get round La Source on the first lap...

I would too, but it would be restricted to 26 starters. Otherwise, they would have to use the real pits and start line
