Good news or bad news, depending on your opinion of this. Although having so many manufacturers is bad for F1, I reckon the championship would have been a mess without them. If no more manufacturers are allowed to join, that would limit any future problems.

Why, because no-one else could afford to field a sensible entry? lol

if you take away the manafacturers, i.e the ones with the money, it would make cost cutting easier, therefore, as the sport becomes cheaper, more teams enter. it might have needed a few transitional years, but i think manafaactuers are killing F1 slowly.
so, in summary, todays news = bad (in my opinion)

This is something I said would happen months ago. It will ruin the sport, and as soon as they the manufactureres get bored, they will be off, and that will be it

The thing is, if a rival series WAS set up, where would the best drivers go? Obviously we won't find out.

If costs are seriously reduced though, and the rules remain sensible, F1 should be alright. If not, well it can't get much worse than it is at the moment.

Okay then, We start by getting rid of the major manufacturers. Let them build the engines, fine. But no Works teams. Then you bring in more tyre companies and tell them to do some R&D into how they used to build tyres. you then regress the aero package that Max has brought in, and let the designers hav a free hand in buliding the cars, with the proviso, that they stick to minimum and maximum dimensions. After that, you get rid of auto and sequential gearboxes and go back to a standard H box. Bring back slicks and fuel tanks large enough to do a full race distance. Have the pit lane spped restriction, at 40Km/H so that there is never likely to be any collisions in the pitlane. Clear the Pits and Pitlane of everyone except the Press and Pit crews. Restrict access to the grid to all, but essential personnel. Bring back the old paddock pass and the pits walk about. Lets get the reall spectator back to the circuits, not the hangers on. Lets look at this as our sport, not someone elses. Can you remember Silverstone in I think it was 1992 when that idiot ran across the track as cars were coming across the finish line to finish the race, what are the cances he had neveer been to a race before, and was mainly a ball sport fan. These people we don't need. What we need to do is get more real motorsport fans back to real mortorsprt meetings and get rid of the corporate see and be seens. these people do nothing for the sport in general. They rarely put money in. Fine if they are sponsors. But how many of their guests, never put a penny towards the sport? It won't be many. These people only want to go to the GP. Well, give them a GP, but lets just send them to the cup final instead, they will be happier

So true. And you know the really annoying thing is this: Why is it that the people who can afford to go to the GP get let in for free, but those who really enjoy motorsport, but can't afford tickets and hospitality to each and every event and is not fortunate to have his or her own private yacht or plane i.e. the regular Joe Public, still have to pay???

It's sickening.

A Hollywood actor can get to a GP for no cost, whilst a regular 9-5 office worker/student/teacher/blue collar motorsport fan has to pay a shitload of cash.

Where's the justice?

there is no justice. this sort of thing happens the world over. I was a jobbing drummer at one point. I was skint and had to buy my own sticks and drums and cymbals etc.etc.

...which is probably why they are multi-millionaires. They don't have to spend their money on anything!!!

Apparently 22 teams have applied to enter the 2008 F1 championship.

If it was up to me I'd let them all enter. Then they can have this two tier thing that was mentioned before. 11 teams in each.
