Teams wishing to compete in the 2008 FIA Formula One World Championship must lodge their entries by the end of this month, the FIA announced on Wednesday. The news followed a meeting of the governing body’s World Motor Sport Council in Paris at which the 2008 Sporting Regulations were accepted.

Those regulations will be published in full on March 23, 2006, after which teams have just one week to commit for 2008 ahead of the March 31 deadline.

According to the FIA, the 2008 Sporting Regulations have three objectives:
• to reduce the cost of competing;
• to improve the sporting spectacle; and
• to maintain and, where possible, improve current safety standards.

Following the entry deadline on March 31, the FIA will begin a series of meetings with the teams which enter in order to finalise the regulations for 2008. The regulations which affect the design of the cars must be finalised before 30 June 2006 to give the competing teams sufficient time to design and develop their 2008 cars. The regulations not affecting the design of the cars can be modified at any point up to the start of the 2008 season.

Regulations can be modified following a majority vote of the Sporting Working Group, which consists of a senior representative from each team. Changes then must be ratified by the Formula One Commission and the World Motor Sport Council.

I think that engine ruling is pointless. Yes, it will cut costs but what if one team has an unreliable engine? Does this mean they will be stuck with it for 3 years?

Also, the 12-team business. Why not have more?

because if it gets any more, bernie has to share out the money more. and he cant be doing that. he'd only have enough to fill one swimming pool.
The engine thing wont happen. It cant. We should.. It just.... I wouldnt... i'm too overcome with rage at Max for making these stupid rules. He's clearly doing it to just piss off the teams who won't sign his stupid concorde agreement. The ****

I'm not convinced those 5 other teams will sign up for F1 in 2008. If they don't, F1 will be in a bit of a mess...

A 'design freeze' for three years.... a bit like NASCAR I guess.... no changes to the design without authority....

so what happens if some teams don't meet this deadline.

is it going to be a case of you can participate in the competion but can't contribute any ideas on how to improve the sport.

Or

are the manufacturers going to set up their own competion.

if its going to be the latter, the other consequence is going to be which series can hold onto the best drivers. I know one driver does not make a series.

ITV says that engine changes will result in a 15kg weight penalty rather than a 10-place grid penalty.

That's just as unfair!

Here's the quote:

"And instead of the current 10-place grid relegations, changing an engine before the end of its two-year cycle will attract a 15kg weight penalty."

Two year cycle? Am I misinterpreting this or something?

With it being an ITV quote, I think it's a misprint rather it being a misinterpretation.

typo - it's the two-race cycle.

And although I normally agree with FIA on many of the changes, the 3-year moratorium on engine technology is stupid.
For a series that is suppose to be technologically advance, this is strictly a big step backwards.

GO Prototypes!!!!

Didn't Max wat it up to 3 races at one point. Stupid thing is that they want this to save money. So what happens, They let the fastest 10 pootle around wasting fuel in practice <blink>

The stupidly funny thing is that the 3-year moratorium is Renault's idea - and they may sill pull out <grrr>

and the 3-race thing... well, why not a whole season on 1 engine.
