Is there any reason why they blow up in such spectacular fashion most of the time? :-D Made a dull race more lively. |

Most of the time? I can only remember one going bang with lots of flames and smoke, the others have just smoked a bit. The reason there's loads of smoke: on failure, the moving parts inside the engine all thrash about causing damage to the engine block, and the coolant and oil get mixed together, and get into the cylinder bores, or what's left of them. If you get coolant in the cylinders, you get white smoke (in road cars, often the sign your head gasket is leaking), and oil usually gives off black or grey smoke.... |

Ralf Schumacher, Heidfeld, Rosberg at Malaysia, Villeneuve at Bahrain. Last season the engine problems (ie. Mercedes engine problems) were boring, no flames. |

Maybe that should be a new regulation. Engine Failures: Must produce flames. |
