Felipe Massa will lose 10 places on the grid for the Malaysian Grand Prix after his Ferrari's engine was replaced. Under current F1 rules, an engine has to last for two races, but Ferrari said Massa would be using a new one for Sunday's race at the Sepang circuit. Massa qualified second for last week's Bahrain GP but could only finish ninth. Jacques Villeneuve (BMW Sauber), David Coulthard (Red Bull) and Giancarlo Fisichella will also have new engines and be penalised in Malaysia. Scotland's Coulthard said the rule, introduced as a cost-cutting measure, should be reviewed. He claimed it works against the principle of grand prix racing and encourages drivers to retire from races. "I have consistently said that (we should) take away this handicap formula as much as possible," he said. "This should be about the fastest cars, the guys who have done the best job during an individual grand prix weekend. "If I had stopped just before the chequered flag I wouldn't have had a penalty here. But because I crossed the line - 10th place, no points - I get a penalty." |

Perhaps penalising the teams instead of the driver by a deduction of championship points to team only would address this but there are circumstances when it is because of driver error so it would be a hard rule to govern... |

We want one engine per race weekend and this 3rd qual session sorted out so they dont drive round for 10 mins burning fuel off |

Not a bad plan. Replacing an engine between races is a 10-points constructor championship penalty - even if it dies DURING a race. So you'd not affect the driver's title, but teams can't just park the car a lap or 2 before the finish to get a free pass at a new engine, vs those who's engines die after the race is over or during the week. |

They have found a way of making sure Schumacher isn't affected...give all the crap engines to his teammate. I don't think Schumacher has even had ONE engine penalty, and that's in 54 races. |

10 points is far too steep! Shame for Massa though. Might put him on the back foot psychologically. |

10 points was just a suggestion. It needs to be tough enough to keep teams from being willing to take the hit consistantly, but not too tough to hurt the smaller teams. Maybe the greater half the points from the prior race or 3 points. |

The rule is unfair on the drivers. Teams should get a points penalty, that would be fairer. Driver penalties is too harsh for something that isn't their fault (unless you don't like Raikkonen) |

Yeah, I agree. Maybe dock the constructor 3 points for an engine change. The driver shouldn't have to suffer though. |

Im confused! I thought that if you didnt finish the race u didnt fet an engine penalty, so why then had JV been penalised? |

That's right. Wasn't DC saying that if he'd retired he could have changed the engine eith no penalty? That story must be wrong, unless the rules have been changed. |

The FIA brought this rule in to cut costs and then all they do now is drive round and waste fuel, Is't that a bit stupid? |
