This is what went down in chat tonight at the NOA's chat at Camp Hyrule. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Transcript for Live Forum: 'The Amphitheater', Thu Aug 19 17:58:57 EDT 2004, User: EVILEYES64 NOA_ALAN: Wow, look at those campers fly! NOA_ANDY: Send to All: Remember that this is a moderated chat, so pick a good question before you type something in! 5:59 PM NOA_JESSIE: Hi guys. ^-^/ 5:59 PM NOA_ANDY: Hey Jessie! 5:59 PM NOA_JESSIE: o_O I'm a tent. :x 5:59 PM NOA_ALAN: A lot of the info we get in guides comes from the developers. I don't remember exactlly where the 12-year old info came from, but i think we got it from NCL 6:00 PM NOA_ALAN: Ha ha! 6:00 PM NOA_ALAN: I just answered a question no one else can see 6:00 PM NOA_ANDY: Welcome, everyone to the CH2005 NP Krew Chat!!!! 6:00 PM NOA_CHRIS: Hey people! 6:00 PM NOA_ALAN: Chris = tent 6:00 PM NOA_ALAN: Andy = the immortal flaming campfire 6:00 PM NOA_ANDY: Da NP Krew is in the house! 6:00 PM NOA_CHRIS: I'm here on time, and that's what matters. 6:00 PM NOA_ANDY: How do you guys like Camp this year? 6:01 PM NOA_ALAN: I've been poking around camp this week. The cabin rivalry is pretty fierce 6:01 PM NOA_ANDY: Yup, there's a stiff competition this year. 6:01 PM NOA_CHRIS: Yeah, people are playing for keeps. 6:01 PM NOA_JESSIE: Yeah, it always is. Has anyone had their underwear on the flagpole yet? 6:01 PM NOA_ANDY: Cabin 4 is in the lead, but Cabin 1 is on the move. 6:02 PM NOA_ANDY: We wised up to those tricks, Jessie. NOA HQ is now locked down. 6:02 PM NOA_ANDY: Wanna get to some questions? 6:02 PM NOA_JESSIE: Haha, good thing. Sure! 6:02 PM TSA: This is a question for the guys who write Player's Guides. In The Wind Waker's Player's Guide, I noticed you said that Link is 12 years old. How did you guys come of with that age, as well as how do you come up with some of the tidbits in the guides that arent't found in the games themselves? 6:03 PM NOA_ALAN: *ahem* 6:03 PM NOA_JESSIE: Alan got kicked. 6:03 PM NOA_TAYLOR: Hi 6:03 PM NOA_ANDY: I didn't do it ... 6:03 PM NOA_JESSIE: Hi Taylor. 6:03 PM NOA_JESSIE: Haha 6:04 PM NOA_JESSIE: Well, TSA, I'll let Alan put in his 2 cents about that one, but in the meantime... 6:04 PM NOA_ALAN: Hey, i'm back! 6:04 PM NOA_CHRIS: I thought he looked a little older than 12, myself. 6:04 PM NOA_JESSIE: We are costantly in close communication with the development team and Japan when we write a guide. 6:04 PM NOA_ANDY: There he is. 6:04 PM NOA_JESSIE: *constantly 6:04 PM NOA_ALAN: Well, "close" communication. They yell at us a lot and we just kinda nod 6:04 PM NOA_JESSIE: Heh 6:05 PM NOA_CHRIS: He's 12, dag-nabbit! Put it in tha book! 6:05 PM NOA_ALAN: Mark it down! 6:05 PM NOA_JESSIE: ^-^; 6:05 PM JSR: Hey NP Krew! I was wondering, on average, how long does it take you guys to write a guide and what's the process that you go through? 6:05 PM NOA_CHRIS: Of course, that's through a translator. 6:05 PM NOA_JESSIE: Yeah 6:06 PM NOA_ALAN: It takes us between 2-3 weeks to write a guide, but the whole process beginning to end takes about 2 months 6:06 PM NOA_CHRIS: NOA Tommy usually spends only about 4 or 5 days workin' on his part of the books. 6:06 PM NOA_ALAN: We'd actually like to have more time on the writing and game playing end, but usually it just can't happen because of game deadlines and printing times and so forth 6:06 PM NOA_ALAN: We also spend a crazy-long amount of time copy editing the guides 6:07 PM NOA_ALAN: Oops, did i type that out loud? 6:07 PM NOA_CHRIS: Sorry, I got kicked. I wasn't saying anything funny anyways. 6:07 PM NOA_JESSIE: Hey, they should see the tent under your desk, eh? 6:07 PM MBI: What has been your favorite article been, over the years you have worked at Nintendo Power? 6:07 PM NOA_ALAN: When i wrote the Metroid Prime guide, i worked 90-100 hours a week and actually stayed at nintendo for a couple of nights 6:07 PM NOA_ALAN: Favorite article? 6:08 PM NOA_ALAN: Hmmm.... that's hard 6:08 PM NOA_JESSIE: Hmm... 6:08 PM NOA_JESSIE: Tales of Symphonia. 6:08 PM NOA_ALAN: I did a really cool april fool's article that didn't make it into the magazine, but i guess that doesn't count. 6:08 PM NOA_JESSIE: That was funny. XD; 6:08 PM NOA_CHRIS: Yeah, that was a shame. 6:08 PM NOA_ANDY: Alan -- Let us post it online! 6:09 PM NOA_ANDY: ... or was it not suitable for all ages? 6:09 PM NOA_ALAN: I like my Baten Kaitos preview this month. It's hard for me to remember more than about a week previous. My mind's going 6:09 PM NOA_JESSIE: Oh, and also the Skies of Arcadia Legends preview. That was super fun. 6:09 PM NOA_CHRIS: Yeah, working on multiple articles every month for a few years, and it's difficult to pull out all-stars. 6:09 PM THELINKMASTER89: How long do you usually have to play a game before you can rate them for Now Playing? 6:10 PM NOA_ALAN: It depends on the game linkmaster. For big reviews i like to spend hours with a game. For something like, say, Lotus Racing, you don't need more than about 20 minutes to realize that it's complete poo 6:10 PM NOA_JESSIE: Anywhere from a half hour if it's a simple game to half a day, myself. 6:10 PM NOA_ANDY: Diss! 6:10 PM NOA_CHRIS: Link, it depends totally on the title. Some games are obviously pretty straight forward, like puzzle games and younger platformers, so they're easy to get a grip on. Big games might be harder. 6:10 PM NOA_JESSIE: o.oa 6:11 PM NOA_ALAN: Take that Lotus Racing! 6:11 PM NOA_JESSIE: Haha 6:11 PM NOA_ALAN: Somewhere a single game designer is crying 6:11 PM NOA_ANDY: Yup. Maybe he's watching ... 6:11 PM NOA_JESSIE: >.> 6:11 PM CHEEZEYKID17: If you spend your time at work playing video games, what do you do to relax, and do you often get addicted to the games you are playing? 6:11 PM NOA_JESSIE: ...play more games. XD; 6:11 PM NOA_ALAN: Believe it or not, when i go home i usually play more games 6:12 PM NOA_JESSIE: And write, read, draw... 6:12 PM NOA_JESSIE: But mostly play games. 6:12 PM NOA_ALAN: But besides that, i also read about a book a week and go to movies 6:12 PM NOA_CHRIS: Sorry, I'm gettin' booted. 6:12 PM NOA_CHRIS: Back, tho'! 6:12 PM NOA_ALAN: I'm also a huge baseball nut, so i watch or listen to a lot of games and manage my fantasy team. 6:12 PM NOA_ANDY: I think the system boots you if you don't make enough wisecracks. 6:12 PM NOA_ALAN: Man, i should be here for life if that's the case 6:13 PM SUPAKOOPA6: What games are you guys/girls looking forward to this year? (for me its final fantasy I and II) 6:13 PM NOA_ALAN: Games i want: Baten Kaitos, Baten Kaitos and Baten Kaitos 6:13 PM NOA_CHRIS: I sleep a lot, in my spare time. Wait, you mean outside of work? 6:14 PM NOA_ALAN: But also Paper Mario 2, Second Sight, X-Men Legends, The Movies and maaaybe Lord of the Rings. I need to play it first 6:14 PM NOA_JESSIE: Baten Kaitos, definitely. (delayed, sorry) 6:14 PM NOA_ALAN: Resident Evil 4 is on there, of course, but that's a little ways off yet 6:14 PM NOA_CHRIS: I'm looking forward to Mario Tennis, and a better build of THPS2... the one we have is a little dicey still. 6:14 PM DARK_SAMURAI: When we think of Nintendo, we think of quality. I was curious why don't you guys wrap your magazines in that cover plastic stuff? My magazine always comes in soggy, and some other may too. 6:15 PM NOA_ANDY: Move to California or Arizona. 6:15 PM NOA_ALAN: Hey, i hear ya Samurai. My newspaper is always soggy here in rainy seattle. 6:15 PM NOA_CHRIS: Cost, mostly. Polybags are a chunk of cash to do. 6:15 PM NOA_ALAN: As for why we don't wrap it, i think it's a cost thing. 6:15 PM NOA_JESSIE: (AFK a sec :x) 6:15 PM NOA_CHRIS: I suggest getting a better mailbox, too. 6:15 PM GBA{+[__]--}: Hey NP Krew! I was just wondering, do you prefer to write reviews on games for the Gamcube or the Game Boy Advance? Or, do you not have a preference? 6:15 PM NOA_JESSIE: Sorry, back. 6:16 PM NOA_JESSIE: I don't have a personal preference, really. It really depends on the game. Sometimes I think I won't like a game, but then when I play it, I really like it. 6:16 PM NOA_ALAN: Hey GBA. It kinda depends on the game. I usually prefer GCN games, but if something like a Golden Sun or Shining Force comes along, that's always great 6:17 PM NOA_CHRIS: I'd prolly have to go with Virtual Boy. 6:17 PM SUPAKOOPA6: What are your favorite game genre(s)? 6:17 PM NOA_ALAN: Chris is real old skool 6:17 PM NOA_ALAN: I love RPGs, sports games and FPS 6:17 PM NOA_JESSIE: RPG and Strategy 6:17 PM NOA_ALAN: FPSes? FPSsses? Whatever. 6:17 PM NOA_CHRIS: It's funny, nobody lists Sports as their fave genre in Now Playing, yet it's those titles we prolly play the most around here. 6:17 PM NOA_CHRIS: In our spare time, I mean. 6:17 PM NOA_ALAN: Yeah, i'm always clocking fools in Madden and MVP 6:17 PM NOA_CHRIS: I like adventure shooters like Prime and Second Sight. 6:17 PM ONYXYOUKAI: Is it hard to meet the deadlines for your articles? 6:17 PM NOA_ALAN: And back in the day, we played NHL Hitz all the time. I mean, like, ALL THE TIME\ 6:18 PM NOA_ALAN: Onyx: Some months are worse than others. If we also have a guide, it can be pretty rough 6:18 PM NOA_JESSIE: Sometimes it gets hectic around here, but it's usually not too hard to meet deadlines. 6:18 PM NOA_CHRIS: Onyx, not really. We're chained to our desks starting at about a week and a half from our deadline. 6:18 PM NOA_ALAN: Months where we don't have guides (which isn't that often anymore) aren't that bad. But it's still a lot of work 6:18 PM NOA_JESSIE: If someone is really slammed, we try to help each other out. 6:18 PM NOA_CHRIS: Except Alan. 6:18 PM NOA_CHRIS: He's on his own. 6:18 PM NOA_ALAN: The chains involve a lot of guilt and angry glances, but they work just the same as cold steel 6:18 PM NOA_JESSIE: Hah 6:18 PM NOA_DANO: Alan likes being chained up. 6:19 PM NOA_JESSIE: >.>; 6:19 PM NOA_CHRIS: Yikes! 6:19 PM NOA_JESSIE: *cough* 6:19 PM NOA_JESSIE: Next question! 6:19 PM IBMER: What do you think about Baten Kaitos and how well do you think it will do in America? 6:19 PM NOA_JESSIE: XD; 6:19 PM NOA_ALAN: Actually, i just wanted to use the phrase Cold Steel 6:19 PM NOA_ALAN: I'll be packing up my desk now 6:19 PM NOA_CHRIS: afk for a sec. Getting updates to a certain, magical game... 6:19 PM NOA_ALAN: IBMER: I just got back from Namco and looking at Baten Kaitos, and i think that it could be a very, very special RPG 6:19 PM NOA_ALAN: Like, FF III kinda special 6:19 PM NOA_JESSIE: Baten Kaitos is so amazing. I really hope it does well. I think it will, but I also thought that about Beyond Good and Evil. *sniffle* 6:20 PM ZEO2: If you dont get your picture or enveplope posted in the month after you mailed it, Is there a chance you could get it posted in another month? 6:20 PM NOA_ALAN: As for how it will do, i don't know. It doesn't have a huge order right now, and it's got a really weird title. It's also coming out at the same time as a lot of other big games 6:20 PM NOA_ALAN: Yay! Chris just handed me Metroid Prime 2! Guess what i'm doing after this chat! *drools* 6:20 PM NOA_JESSIE: Yes, Zeo2. We often hold onto art if we don't have enough room for the art we received that month. 6:21 PM NOA_DANO: Alan is your game in Spanish or French? 6:21 PM NOA_ALAN: Lots of art gets posted up at my desk 6:21 PM NOA_ALAN: Dano: Hopefully english. The version i had this morning was in German 6:21 PM NOA_ALAN: Verbotten! Samus ist nicht! 6:21 PM NOA_DANO: Yahwol! 6:21 PM NOA_JESSIE: Lol 6:21 PM NOA_JESSIE: Hey, let me translate. XD; 6:22 PM GAMECUBEVIC: How are the Screen test captions chosen? 6:22 PM NOA_CHRIS: Most of the good art ends up on the walls around here, too. 6:22 PM NOA_ALAN: I have art at my desk that shows link eating a piece of chicken. That's high comedy 6:22 PM NOA_CHRIS: Chicken! 6:22 PM NOA_ANDY: Cucco, yo. 6:22 PM NOA_DANO: Tastes like Tektite! 6:22 PM NOA_ALAN: Vic: I go through all the entries and pick out the ones that make me laught 6:22 PM NOA_CHRIS: Vic, dartboard, like all of our reader entries. 6:22 PM NOA_ALAN: Or, the ones that make me laugh that i can print. We get some extremely funny and VERY inappropriate captions 6:22 PM NOA_CHRIS: Keep it up! 6:22 PM NOA_JESSIE: Hehe 6:22 PM NOA_ALAN: Shame on you and so forth 6:22 PM CROSSING142: So, has the NP Krew been enjoying Pikmin 2? 6:23 PM NOA_ALAN: I'm the Prime Minister of Pikmin! 6:23 PM NOA_JESSIE: Yes It's a super fun game. It's tough to find a game that has equal levels of fun and innovation.6:23 PM NOA_ALAN: sorry, booted again 6:23 PM NOA_ALAN: Story of my life 6:24 PM NOA_CHRIS: I felt the wrath of the same golden boot, alan. 6:24 PM NOA_JESSIE: I haven't been booted. ~~~6:24 PM KAS2001: How do you feel about the upcoming Pokémon Games Fire Red and Leaf Green? 6:24 PM NOA_JESSIE: *waits for it* 6:24 PM NOA_ALAN: Now i know what it feels like. I'll never boot again 6:24 PM NOA_ALAN: You know, i never think to play pokemon, but when i do i get really into it for like 50 hours. Then i tend to put them away again 6:25 PM NOA_CHRIS: They're a lot of fun. It's cool seeing the progression of pokemon as far as it's come, then bring it all back to the original. The wireless adapter should've been done years ago. It's supereffective. 6:25 PM NOA_ALAN: I never feel the need to find every last pokemon, but i think as an rpg they're pretty good 6:25 PM NOA_JESSIE: I like what I've played so far. They could have just remade Red and Blue, but they didn't. They added all sorts of new features in addition to completely revamping the graphics. That made it all the more fun for me. 6:25 PM NOA_ALAN: supereffective isn't a word, by the way. Don't let us fool you 6:25 PM TIKIMAN: I've always wondered, who answers the player's pulse letters? 6:26 PM NOA_CHRIS: Pokemon gets a weird rap, but the core games are still pretty good. 6:26 PM NOA_JESSIE: That's been me for the last year or so. Now Steven Thomason is your Player's Pulse man. 6:26 PM NOA_ALAN: Mr. Miyamoto answers all player's pulse letters 6:26 PM NOA_JESSIE: >.>; 6:26 PM NOA_ANDY: OK guys, we have time for just a few more ... 6:26 PM NOA_CHRIS: NOA Tommy is a video game genius. He knows stuff that we wouldn't be able to find out through years of research. 6:26 PM NOA_ANDY: Lemme pick some reeeeal hard ones ... 6:26 PM NOA_ALAN: Yeah, Steve is a vid savant. It's scary 6:27 PM NOA_CHRIS: I prefer vidiot savant. 6:27 PM NOA_ALAN: Touche 6:27 PM SHADOW191: When you review games and write articles and stuff do you get paid? 6:27 PM NOA_CHRIS: En garde! 6:27 PM NOA_ALAN: I don't get paid, but i do gain 200 EP for each article 6:27 PM NOA_ALAN: And occasionally i find a few gold pieces in my desk 6:28 PM NOA_CHRIS: Heck no, Shadow. We're lucky to get bread crumbs and water. But they have these *delicious* 1up mushrooms to keep us happy. 6:28 PM RUNNINGWITHSHEEP: NP crew, I was wondering, if there was one game that you would recommend EVERYONE who had a gamecube to buy, what would it be? 6:28 PM NOA_JESSIE: Tales of Symphonia~ 6:28 PM NOA_CHRIS: Shaq-fu 3. 6:29 PM NOA_ALAN: Running: Um... i would say either Metroid Prime or Pikmin 2 off the top of my head. 6:29 PM NOA_ANDY: OK, one last question ... 6:29 PM NOA_CHRIS: Prolly Metroid Prime. It's just head and shoulders above most games. 6:29 PM NOA_ALAN: But a lot of it depends on what kind of games you like. Tales, Madden, Super Mario Sunshine are all also really good 6:29 PM NOA_ALAN: But Prime is just perfection 6:29 PM NOA_CHRIS: Soul Calibur II, maybe? 6:29 PM NOA_ANDY: *cough* SSBM 6:29 PM NOA_ALAN: *glances at MP 2* 6:29 PM NOA_CHRIS: I like me the fightin'. 6:29 PM NOA_ALAN: Oh yeah, SSBM 6:29 PM NOA_JESSIE: Yeah, everyone loves that game. 6:29 PM NOA_ALAN: Andy pwns at SSBM, by the way 6:29 PM NOA_ALAN: He can defeat all comers 6:29 PM NOA_ANDY: *blushes. 6:29 PM NOA_CHRIS: alan is teh suck 6:30 PM NOA_DANO: Alan did you forget about Minority Report? 6:30 PM NOA_ALAN: chris is teh wannabe 6:30 PM NOA_ANDY: lol ... OK, here we go. 6:30 PM CRYSTALBLADE12: I know that Nintendo Power has alot of competition to put up with. How do you try to get ahead of the game? 6:30 PM NOA_ALAN: Minority Report is my own special love. Others just don't understand 6:30 PM NOA_CHRIS: Blade, mostly through sleep and offsite work parties. 6:30 PM NOA_CHRIS: Oh, and sabotage. 6:30 PM NOA_ALAN: Crystal: We work really hard to put out the best magazine we can. Sometimes it's kind of an uphill battle, but mostly it's just a lot of hard work and staying in touch with the industry 6:31 PM NOA_ALAN: Oh, and sabotage 6:31 PM NOA_ANDY: Well said. 6:31 PM NOA_DANO: Don't forget early access to the games and direct access to the developers.... 6:31 PM NOA_ALAN: Dano: Yeah, when they actually talk to us that helps too 6:31 PM NOA_DANO: Well, when they feel like giving them to us. 6:31 PM NOA_CHRIS: We're trying to get the magazine going in some new directions right now, too. It is a process we should do all the time, but we get lazy. 6:31 PM NOA_ALAN: I'm looking at YOU Electronic Arts 6:32 PM NOA_DANO: And, when they allow us to publish the information. 6:32 PM NOA_ANDY: Thanks a lot for stopping by Camp Hyrule y'all. Any closing words? 6:32 PM NOA_CHRIS: Otherwise we have to do another NOA Alan envelope artwork spectacular article AGAIN. 6:32 PM NOA_ALAN: Closing words? 6:32 PM NOA_CHRIS: fermer 6:33 PM NOA_ALAN: Um... keep the faith in NP. There's big changes afoot. Oh, and take a serious look at Baten Kaitos. 6:33 PM NOA_ALAN: And Prime 2 6:33 PM NOA_JESSIE: Have fun at camp everyone, and thanks for the great questions! ^-^/ 6:33 PM NOA_CHRIS: Thanks, everyone! 6:33 PM NOA_ALAN: Yeah, thanks everyone but chris 6:33 PM NOA_ANDY: OK, thanks again and feel free to stop by anytime!!! 6:33 PM NOA_CHRIS: I pwn Alan 6:33 PM NOA_JESSIE: Lol... 6:33 PM NOA_JESSIE: Take it to the parking lot you two! 6:34 PM NOA_ALAN: chris is not teh pwn 6:34 PM NOA_ANDY: *slowly closes the curtains ... 6:34 PM NOA_ALAN: *opens the curtain and waves before a big cane pulls him offstage -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
