A Timeline of Philosophy

Yes, a lot of entries were left out—I'm not adding people I'm never going to read. (But I do plan to update it as I get to other things.) This is just a baseline.

Also, I went with historical periods instead of philosphical movements because it seemed more concrete. How do you break down Aristotelianism? Do you only count his contemporaries, or do you count Aquinas in there, too? How Aristotelian do you have to be, do you count Kant? That seems silly. Etc. So, historical periods as substructure it is.

See anything completely wrong? Would you change anything? If so, what and how?

Peter Adamson saw that 5 century gap and cried.... Then he saw the missing Islamic World philosophy and cried some more.

But seriously, there are some pretty glaring omissions.

Heraclitus?
Plotinus?
Berkeley?
William James?

Rawls?
Quine?
Frege?
Kripke?

I assume you avoiding post modernists on purpose....

But surely some of that list belongs in there?

Well, yes and no. This isn't my version of the history of philosophy—this is me trying to chronogically organize what I've personally read or want to read. It's personal reference, not an unabridged list. So yes, there are glaring omissions. Heraclitus, James and Rawls will make the list as soon as I get to them. The other ones, eh, we'll see.

No post-modernist gibberish, ever. I read enough of that shit the first time around, it's nonsense. I can get into some post-structuralist stuff but Derrida, Deleuze, Barthes etc. totally lost the plot. Also no Rand.

Anybody not grouped up as they should?

Well, Locke is usually considered an enlightenment figure. But categories are pretty arbitrary anyway.

Yeah, they're fuzzy, but also don't want to be any more wrong than I have to.

Any other folks you'd recommend to fill out the gaps?

Hmm.. You're a bit weak on the Hellenic schools other than the stoics. In terms of medievals, I'm not big on the scholastics or church fathers. But I would suggest adding Avarroes and Maimonides for a little balance.

As for more modern ones, you're pretty lite on the analytic guys, besides Russell. But I suspect it's not a big interest of yours. I suggested a few.

I just noticed Bentham isn't on your list. Neither is Fichte.

There are 20th century people you could think about that aren't all post modernists. Rorty, Chalmers, Zizek, Peter Singer, MacIntyre, Dan Dennett, Nagel, John Searle.

Also, how much do you want to veer into politics? Burke, Carlyle, Oakeshott, Scruton on the right. Dworkin, Habermas, Foucault, Gramsci, etc on the left.

Your face is weak.

Seriously though, thanks for the reccos.

And yeah, the analytical guys! I've read a bit of Tarski actually, I like it okay. I just can't do too much of it at once, it gets a little frustrating. And Rorty I need to get to for sure.
