Chinese middle class families can afford a Steinway?

If they charge what they are worth?

Probably... ;)

Good news for Chinese piano techs.

My brother trained a number of them while he was there.

I had no idea Paulson owned Steinway. How did I miss that?

It's more than likely going to auction: https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2018-08-07/a-steinway-auction-could-attract-keen-piano-players

If we each pitch in $5K and have Jon cover the rest...
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Personally, I think he'll be lucky if he gets half his investment back.

HOLY CARP!!!
1 billion is a lot. When Bechstein was listed at the stock exchange its value was something like 5 million, or 0.5 % of the value of Steinway. Do they really make 200x more Money?

Taking into account Steinway’s Boston and Essex brands, it’s official used piano program, band instrument division ... I suppose it is conceivable that Steinway makes 200x more money then Bechstein.

I don't believe valuation is based strictly on revenues or even profit...

That being said, Conn-Selmer alone brings in $250,000,000 in revenue.
The acoustic pianos were generating about $300,000,000 in sales back in 2013. I haven't paid attention since they went private with Paulson.

They are doing okay. The $1,000,000,000 number surprises me a little, but if he can get it, he'll clear a few hundred million.

As for pianos, the numbers i found say Bechstein sold over 6,000 pianos in 2017, Steinway sold a little over half that number.

How much revenue did Bechstein book for the sale of those 6000 pianos?
