Geaux Tigers!

Many football pundits think the Saints' organization had lost their rabid-arse minds by trading up for their #1 pick in the draft this year. Sometimes, though, the talking heads are simply talking heads. The reasons... 1. The Saints return 22 starters. Yeppers, every guy that started on last year's team is back for this year. They have very few holes to fill, although it's always nice to have depth or to upgrade a position. The biggest question mark is the return of Okafor from injury. Projections are a maximum of 4 rookies making the roster this year. So the Saints really targeted two players in this draft, Chubb and Davenport, both defensive ends. Many do not know they tried to trade up for Chubb, but simply were not willing to give away an entire draft, as in the Ditka era. But weeks before the draft, they were already trying to cut a deal with multiple teams, should Davenport fall into the teens. The deal with Green Bay had been agreed to, over a week before the draft. 2. Why Davenport? Why do the Saints have confidence he will perform after playing at a small school in a no-name program? Connections. Davenport's head coach is a New Orleans native, who played his college ball at Nicholl's State in Louisiana. During his coaching career, Frank Wilson coached at Ole Miss under Ed Ogeron and coached several years at LSU under Les Miles. During his time in the SEC, he became very good friends with Ryan Nielsen, a defensive line coach at Ole Miss. Ryan, btw, just happens to be the defensive line coach for the New Orleans Saints. When Davenport showed up on the Saints' scouting reports, phone calls were made between friends, and New Orleans was assured of the talent level and locker room character of the player they were assessing. Even in a business involving subjective evaluations and millions of dollars, many times it still boils down to who you know... |

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead

Yes it does. The only thing on can be sure of with talking heads is they have to talk. |
