Do you have any summer vacation plans? We were originally supposed to go to Myrtle Beach with Karla's brother and his wife (They have a time share, but we weren't going to stay with them, were going to rent a house ourselves), but they canceled and our options have opened up. So we are looking at the following options: 1) Myrtle Beach - isn't really my cup of tea. It's crowded, noisy, I don't golf, and there are too many drunks running around. On the other hand, there are a lot of options for activities for the boy and his friend if they get bored with the beach, plus there should be music all over the place. 2) Harker's Island/Cape Lookout National Shore - I really like this option. It's as close to rural as you can find on the Eastern Coastline. There are several small fishing villages we can stay at that run Ferries over to Cape Lookout shore (great waves for the boy), Shackelford Banks to see the wild horses, and Kayak Rentals for exploring the Sound. Not a lot of rainy day options, however. I'm sure there are some nice local restaurants, but not many, and not many non-water based attractions. 3) Area surrounding Myrtle Beach... Anywhere from Murrel's Inlet to North Myrtle - Doesn't seem to be AS crowded as Myrtle proper, still has some attractions for food and entertainment other than the water, and Myrtle is close enough to drive to in a pinch. However, this is all a guess. I have never been. Have any of the forum members? 4) Any other ideas? I was considering renting a lakehouse, but wow, has that gotten expensive. |

I like the Outer Banks, once you get past the moving day traffic you can settle in for a nice beach week. If you really don't want crowds you can go down to Salvo or Hatteras, I did that a few years ago. If you have a Jeep (not an AWD, a real Jeep) you can find some quiet beaches above Corolla. We did this last year, day 1 traffic between here and there was a nightmare but you can take a Jeep miles north of where the roads end and it is pretty nice. Sandbridge is nice too, you can take advantage of the tourist stuff at VA Beach if you want but you don't have to deal with crowds if you don't. |

Growing up we spent many summer vacations on Long Lake in Harrison, ME. It is a long drive from here but you might find some nice lakeside places for a more reasonable price. There are a lot of lakes and not a lot of people. It has probably been over 10 years since I have been to this area but I'm sure it is still pretty quiet. I'm not familiar with this property, but the pictures are typical. It says Vacationland right on the license plate. https://www.vrbo.com/121542ha ![]() |

We’re going to Brazil the week of Fourth of July, and then Northern Europe for two weeks in August. The former is booked. The latter is still taking shape. |

My summer vacation plans? I'd like to take a rental and head to the Mid-Atlantic states like I did back in 2011. It's been almost seven years since I've been there, and I'd like to spend time on the beach as well as seeing the rest of that area once again. I'd also like to visit Annapolis, MD, as I like seeing small cities and because I haven't been there yet. |

No idea about the "summer" yet. Probably nothing! But we'll be in New Mexico for the last two weeks of May. I'm giving some talks at UNM and then we're heading for Carlsbad, White Sands, and lots of hiking in the mountains. After that, back up the Rio Grande to Santa Fe for a week. We'll probably do lots of day trips in the area (Bandelier, Valles Caldera, high road to Taos, etc.). |

Cannon Beach is not really a "beach town," in the sense of a place to sit on the beach and get a tan and go swimming. In fact the hotels in the area have no air-conditioning. It's on the Pacific coast, and it's a small artsy-fartsy community with antique stores, art galleries, etc. ![]() Also known for its fine dining: ![]() The weather is usually too cold to sun-bathe, and the water is almost always too cold to go swimming. However, it's a good jumping-off place for the Oregon coast, and we plan to do some sight-seeing in Astoria (antique stores) about 40 miles north. ![]() We also intend to visit the Oregon Coast Rail Riders and perhaps catch a 1960's revival show in Lincoln (about 30 miles south). This was the view from our hotel last year: ![]() It's a wonderful place to relax. It's about 90 miles southwest of Portland, and we loved our time there last year. This year, we have the same hotel, and, as a matter of fact, the exact same room. |

Holy crap. I just found out that their are remote camping cabins on Cape Lookout that are only accessible by boat. Just you, your cabin, and the ocean for a week. |
