It’s an interesting question as to how much the mountain caving in impacted his leverage. It was a known risk for quite a while but it seems like his nuclear program is screwed for a long time. Who knows though as it takes time for real news analysis to come out.

Hard to say. It would appear he sees a clear and present danger to his rule.

People can say what they want, but the impetus behind this is pressure finally being applied by China. The question is why China has finally decided to put the screws on...

This was always known. Denuclearized Korea, no excuse for American presence, more free reign over the South China Sea, no refugees from NK. What’s not to love?

Indeed historic, though. Perhaps things just got very real for China.

Yea, that came up last Friday, the same day as KJU's announcement.

Story here (the FT link requires registration):

Quote:

Mount Mantap, the 7,200-foot-high peak under which North Korea has detonated all its nuclear bombs, visibly shifted during that last nuclear test, leading some analysts to wonder if it was suffering from “tired mountain syndrome” and was at risk of collapsing.

If that were true, closing the site would be something North Korea would do anyway, although perhaps without announcing it at such a fortuitous time, if at all.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/north-korean-leader-suspends-nuclear-and-missile-tests-shuts-down-test-site/2018/04/20/71ff2eea-44e7-11e8-baaf-8b3c5a3da888_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.1d73aecb167f

Seems to be confirmed by Chinese scientists:

Quote:

Chinese geologists claim in a new study that the mountain above North Korea’s main nuclear test site collapsed in September, rendering the area unsafe for further testing because of possible radiation leaks — a finding that may shed a different light on Kim Jong Un’s announcement that his country was ceasing its nuclear testing program.

The study carried out by scientists at the University of Science and Technology of China, in Hefei, concluded that the mountain buckled under the stress of multiple explosions caused by the release of huge amounts of heat and energy. The study's authors said the area needs close monitoring for leaking radiation.

The data for the study were collected after North Korea's sixth — and most powerful — nuclear test on Sept. 3. It subsequently triggered four earthquakes.

The findings come ahead of Friday’s summit between Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, and follow Pyongyang's assertion last week it would halt all missile tests and shut down its main nuclear test site, a move interpreted outside North Korea as an attempt by Kim to strike a conciliatory tone at a time when he has come under White House-led pressure to give up his nuclear weapons program.

According to FT he can still use the site for testing.

Sounds like an "all of the above" kind of situation.

I am not 100%, but I think that the Peace Building (where President Moon and First Secretary Kim met) is the one just to the right of the ROK welcome center. The big building in the front is the "welcome center" on the ROK side. The middle blue building where the two DPRK soldiers are standing is the one where the DMZ line goes down the middle. Half is in DPRK and half in ROK.

I have little doubt that Little Kim is completely aware of what life is like in the South, compared to the country he leads.

I find it unfathomable that any human being can see life in the North as being good, when compared to what exists less than 50 miles away.

But, I did say "human being," didn't I?

It is kind of funny, but the picture I show above, the center is the South Korea center. The North Korea has a similar, but not so impressive building also. I will look for my picture of it.

Shocking
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy
