The sexual assault case against Bill Cosby went to the jury Wednesday as his lawyers came under heavy criticism for what some called a blatant attempt to "victim-shame" the parade of women who have leveled accusations against the 80-year-old comedian.

In her own closing argument, Cosby prosecutor Kristen Feden rebuked Bliss for engaging in "utterly shameful" and "filthy" character assassination of Constand and the others.

"She is the exact reason why women don't report these crimes," Feden said.

I've got a big problem with this. Yeah, it sucks, after all these women have allegedly* been through, that they have to be questioned so harshly, but that's the process. It has to be. There is no societal group so sacred that they are or should be above the process of the law. Thorough examination is really the only way to get to the truth; are we supposed to just take someone's word for it now in court, is that how it works?

The other thing is, maybe the defense crossed some lines and maybe they didn't, but the criticism was going to come either way. There is no cross-examination that could have been conducted in which they would not get called out for blaming the victims. Sexual assault is definitely a problem, but it's also become a Golden Calf.

*Speaking of, we respect the rule of law so little now that people are being castigated for pointing out that although pretty damning, these are still technically allegations in a trial that has not yet come to a verdict.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

Yes, if he wants to defend himself at some point he has no choice.

It is ugly business.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Ugly accusations, ugly defense.

I agree - it can't be any other way. If you want to put someone on trial for their freedom (and, let's face it, what is wanted is their money - the civil suits will flow like water) you cannot have any topics that cannot be raised in defense for fear of offending.

Is it possible that a man could be accused of sexual assault by many, many women, when in fact the man is innocent?

I mean it's not like one or two women have accused Cosby.

Yes, of course. Lots of money involved.
