No offense to the Parkland kids but isn’t that how all high schools feel? |

It’s unfortunate but even if all guns were banned today they would still have to maintain security measures for a long time. I think inner city schools have similar feel already no? I guess getting used to being treated like gen pop will be tough getting used to. |

HOLY CARP!!!

We need a new education system. This "model" is over 100 years old. Probably older. Would you drive a 100 year old car every day and expect it to keep up with the world? Mandatory attendance, in a jail like setting, is just stupid. |

Going to high school during the 60's we had a new "model" that allowed us to do things like community volunteer work on our own. Of course much of the time when we were supposed to be doing this new "model" stuff we just goofed off hanging out on the corner. New "model" same as the old "model" over 1,000 years old. |

You hippie. In our place, underclassmen had to wear the school blazer. On Friday, things were allowed to get wild - you could wear a sport jacket instead. Oh, upperclassmen? Sport coat every day except Fridays when (grab your pearls) they could wear a sweater. |

The sport coat and tie was required in high school. I wouldn't be surprised if some schools have dropped this requirement. |

Civics as now taught in public schools is nothing like what any educated adult expects, if compared to what might be remembered as "traditional" content. Activism substitutes for outdated acquisition of knowledge or depth, the students don't understand (are not taught) there is a difference or prerequisite of study, or that there necessarily should be. Ideology overlays perspective, essential in desired "critical thinking" outcomes. |

I agree, but don't see how a voucher system could possibly be implemented. A parent receives a voucher in one form or another, finds the best school. The school is contacted, but says no. They are at capacity. In Oregon, there are already 3 different methods of open enrollment, including inter-district transfers as well as intra-district transfers. Elementary (neighborhood) schools are designed to accommodate 500 students, which means full curriculum (music, PE, Art), lowest possible food service costs, etc. The schools with lower academic achievement levels due to minority students (english language learners), low socio-economic level (you get the picture), do not attract. Bussing. Very complicated as it is, not sure how it could possibly be done with students going all over. As it is, our local district has 180 busses that hit the road every morning. Parents drive their kid(s)? Impossible mess at the schools. As it is, parent drop-off and pick-up creates traffic jams. And on and on. Maybe it could be done. Much better to somehow relinquish the straightjacket placed upon public education, from the legislative level to the teachers' union, and especially change the carp being taught in Ed programs at the university level. |

I think most parents would choose the local school out of convenience. Schools might make busing part of their package, but perhaps with discrete pickup points rather than door to door. Or maybe provide door to door for an extra fee. (Summer camps show how the market will address this problem). Some schools would become magnets for the cognitive elite. Some, indeed most, would follow a different strategy. We sort of know in outline how the system is likely to develop since we have the analogy of post-secondary education. In fact a voucher program did much to jumpstart that system (GI bill). |
