I for one don't agree with lowering voting age. Either you are an adult in all regard, or not. Lowering it beyond the threshold of adulthood devalues the right to vote. Furthermore, I suspect that many of the proponents of a lower voting age want it simply because they believe that this will strengthen their political position, i.e. for political advantage. This can backfire quickly: While teenagers may be more likely to vote left right now, they are also easier to influence by extremists. For instance, at the election in 1933, the NSDAP was significantly more popular with young voters than with older ones. |

Legal age used to be 21. The lowering of legal age occurred during the Vietnam War. If you were old enough to die for your country, you were old enough to drink and vote (although not necessarily in that order). |

The expected magnitude of potential damage that can be done by one vote cast by an individual is smaller than that of one alcoholic drink consumed by one individual, which in turn is smaller than that of one gun in the hands of one individual. From that perspective, the different age requirements can be justified. The US Constitution also set different age requirements for people to hold elected offices, e.g., 35 for President and VP, 30 for Senators, 25 for House Representatives. These different age requirements can be similarly justified. |

Hu? Was the damage done by the 44% who voted for NSDAP in 1933 smaller than if those 44% had consumed an alcoholic drink? Given all the deaths eventually resulting from this election, you could attribute more than one human death to every vote the NSDAP received It doesn't matter whether the vote is one of ten, or one of a billion. While the influence on the outcome is greater in the first case, the influence of the outcome is proportionally bigger in the second case, but the average impact stays the same. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |
