Safety regulators in the U.S. are investigating air bags in certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles that failed to deploy in frontal collisions linked to four deaths and six injuries.

As many as 425,000 automobiles made by the South Korean manufacturers may be affected, according to an investigation report posted on the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website. NHTSA is investigating whether vehicles made by other carmakers also may be at risk.

The crashes involve Hyundai Sonatas and Sonata hybrids made in 2011, and Kia Forte and Kia Forte Koups made in 2012 and 2013. Hyundai on Feb. 27 recalled almost 155,000 Sonatas after determining that an electrical overstress failed to inflate the air bags during collisions. Hyundai is looking into the product supplier, ZF-TRW, for a possible cause for the electrical problem.

Air bags already are linked to the largest and most complex auto-related recall in U.S. history -- the one that ultimately led to Japan’s Takata Corp. to seek court protection from creditors after its devices were linked to at least 17 deaths. Unlike the Takata situation, which involved exploding air bags with shrapnel, the latest probe involves devices that failed to deploy at all.

When D3 rolled her Hyundai Elantra at 65 mph, the airbags deployed, and she walked away from this wreck.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

That reminds me, I’ve had 3 letters from Honda about a recall on the passenger airbag on my ‘08 Fit, I just haven’t bothered making an appointment yet.

Please get them done.

I'd hate to hear about somebody having to pick Riley up with a stick and a spoon...

Nah, it’s the passenger airbag, so I’d be ok, they’d just be picking up my passenger.

Hurts just to look at that.
Mrs. George had just come home from a total knee replacement 48 hours earlier. I was on call, stuck at the hospital. She called me saying "D3 has had an accident. It's bad, but she's OK."

Seems some asshats were racing on I55. One of them sideswiped her, causing her to lose control and roll the car into the ditch and onto the frontage road. The state trooper, when he was summoned, told her "I was expecting to pull someone dead from the car." She got some bruises, but that car saved her life afaic.

The guy who sideswiped her, much to his credit, stopped and called 911.

Wow - that looks really bad, but glad that she is/was okay!!!! It is amazing how much safer cars have gotten over the past many years. It is nice to know that the technology and building of cars has gotten better.
