https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/politics/california-high-school-teacher-put-on-leave-after-asking-whether-schools-would-allow-students-to-walk-out-to-protest-abortion

Quote:

California high school history teacher Julianne Benzel was put on paid leave after questioning in front of her students whether school administrations would let a group of students protesting abortion walk out of class in the middle of the school day like they did with students who did so on Wednesday in protests over school shootings.

“I opened up the discussion for if schools … are going to allow one group of students to get up during class and walk out to protest on one issue, would they still give the same courtesy to another group of students who wanted to get up and walk out in protest. And I used the example of abortion,” Rocklin High School teacher Benzel said on Fox News Friday morning.

Benzel said two students and one parent took issue with her comment and complained to the administration who then placed her on leave for two days.

The California teacher said she was trying to a start a class discussion ahead of National Walkout Day on whether the situation would be treated the same way if a school walkout was organized from the other side of the political aisle.

Benzel was asked to return to class Friday.

More than 3,000 schools and thousands of students participated in National Walkout Day Wednesday to advocate for stronger gun control in the U.S.

Some school administrations cooperated with the efforts, while other schools disciplined their students by treating the protest as an unexcused absence and giving the students who participated detention.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

It is safer to smile and agree.

But, she didn't get fired. Only "paid leave."

Good thing that will never go on her record, amirite?

Hope not, it could have been an innocent (ISH) question, someone caught up in society spewing out whatever ever impulse they have as a FB(god) given right.

That is a current problem. One ideology sets the expectations, which include simplification of a complex issue down to sound bites, a march, cardboard signs and chants. A teacher offers another complex issue to attempt to get the students to "think critically." But, that is not allowed.

Yet, "critical thinking" is touted all the time, it's one of the top educational buzz words.

Hopefully there is still time for reasonable people, especially teachers, to start pushing back against one-sided expectations, without fear of losing their jobs.

What is the role of a high school teacher these days?

Relax, there is no need for "critical thinking" anymore.

Teachers simply pass along appropriate thoughts.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy
