A pox on both houses.

Serious violation of the KISS principle in both cases.

vi - ugh. Haven't used it since 1988. Emac I don't know about.

Sorry, I'm way too cool to participate in such a thread.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

I use Emacs occasionally because there are some developer tools that are only available as Emacs plugins. I hate it, though. On the plus side, it's super-extensible, but it's a very bloated piece of software.

vi is much more lightweight yet powerful. If I'd have to program in an editor on a daily basis, I might choose vi. For a novice, it's hell though because all the commands are differently from what one is used to. The most important command to remember is how to quit it:
Code:

:q!

Countless people had to manually kill vi because they didn't know how to quit it.

If you are on a Mac and want some impression of vi, open a terminal window and type "vi".

I have used both as my primary editor.

Of course when I was using each of them each was the best editor because my fingers just knew what to do.

I seem to remember that I used Emacs after I used vi and I thought Emacs was better. At least it was better for what I was doing but I still used vi to do some things.

I think it has been many years since I have used either.

SPF PC was great when it came out.

Yes, SPF was a miracle.

PF2 to split the screen, genius!

I use Emacs on a daily basis, mainly for R and TeX, and I enjoy using it. I can work much more efficiently with Emacs than with other options I've tried. I haven't tried vi.

I'd say that, quite to the contrary, the most beautiful pieces of software are free:

- The whole GNU project, including the glorious GNU C compiler
- Linux
- The Apache HTTP server
- the Emacs editor
- The mySQL database.

Consistency is overrated :lol2:

To my defense, in that other post I was talking about the beauty of the code base, not of the actual running programs.

Fair enough. Were you being sarcastic when you wrote this about email?

I can't believe anyone is not using Emacs for reading email.

Say, has either vi or Emacs been ported to iOS or Android as an app?

You can install busybox on Android phones, which includes vi.

Emacs looks ok. Just another full screen editor.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

I just watched 300 for the first time tonight.

How did this escape me for 12 years? An oversight.

I got a phone call today from someone who said they were with Microsoft telling me my microsoft license was about to expire and that I needed to let them access my files immediately so they could update my software...

I wasn't at home so it went into voicemail, but first thing in the morning I'm going to call them back and get this thing fixed.... I wonder if there's a fee. I hope they take credit cards....

Re edlin, out of frustration with it, I wrote myself an editor which I named (tongue in cheek) Ed for my friend and best man Ed Court, whom I worked with at the Steinway Concert & Artists dept back in the 70s. I hadn't heard from him in quite awhile but just found this:

He was one of the best piano technicians I ever knew and a really good guy. RIP Ed. :(
