tl;dr version: Manafort, Gates and others were accused of crimes that would result, if convicted, in decades of prison time. Yet, they pled guilty to lesser infractions.
Quote:

In plea negotiations, federal prosecutors are instructed to require that a defendant plead guilty to “the most serious readily provable charge consistent with the nature and extent of his/her conduct.” (See U.S. Attorney’s Manual, sec. 27.430.) In a properly functioning Justice Department, a defendant is not accused of over $100 million in financial fraud and then, within 24 hours, permitted to plead guilty in a wrist-slap deal that drops the major allegations and caps his potential sentence well beneath the penalties applicable by statute.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

Do we need a special prosecutor for the special prosecutor?

The special prosecutor has no jurisdiction over special people.
The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

HOLY CARP!!!
1. Do you know if the “most serious” charges are “readily provable” is the case of Manafort and Gates?

2. Is this the first time you are aware that the DOJ allowed plea deals that fell short of the “most serious” charge standard? If not, were you commensurately outraged and/or appalled?

1. Perhaps,perhaps not.

2. Is this the first time you are aware that the DOJ allowed plea deals that fell short of the “most serious” charge standard? No, it's been done before, but rarely in a case with the high profile nature of this one.
