Mark Turgeon’s team at the University of Maryland never made it into the Top 25 this season and missed out entirely on March Madness, but the men’s basketball coach made it to No. 1 among the state’s highest-paid employees in 2017.

Turgeon, who has five years left on his contract, earned $2.72 million to into the top spot, according to the state salary database released this week. That perch was occupied for several years by former Maryland football coach Randy Edsall, who was fired in 2015.

Edsall’s successor, DJ Durkin, ranked second among state employees with $2.49 million in income last year. Durkin is in the third year of the five-year contract he signed when he took over the football program.

Maryland women’s basketball coach Brenda Frese was the third highest-paid state employee in 2017. She earned $1.18 million after 16 seasons leading the school’s team to the NCAA Final Four three times and a championship in 2006.

Two leaders of the university’s medical system rounded out the top five highest-paid employees. Stephen Bartlett earned $951,000 for overseeing the surgical teams at all 12 hospitals in the University of Maryland Medical System. Jay Perman earned $945,000 as president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Maryland’s only public health, law, and human services university.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

I somewhat follow sports, but do not know a whole lot about them. But, I wonder how important is the coach. Does one coach really know more strategy than another coach? Or is it just the personality and able to motivate the players that makes them a better coach?

Or, once a coach has a good team, more good players want to come to his school, so the teams are naturally better.

What I mean is if you have a "great" coach but bad players, will they win against a "bad" coach with good players?

Depends.

In college football, you have to be a great recruiter and you have to be a great manager. You have to hire good coordinators and position coaches. You have to have a clear vision of what you want to do, and then strive to implement it.

Coaching can only do so much, You cannot coach speed. You cannot coach basic athleticism. But you can educate and make talent better. And you can motivate.

Once good programs are established, they almost take on a life of their own.

It sounds like there is an implication that these coaches are overpaid.

Somehow the author forget to mention the revenue these teams bring.

Why does the basketball coach make more that the university president? He had a better year.

You get what you pay for.

In 2013-2014, Maryland's final year in the ACC, the Terps earned $73,434,869 in sports revenue, a little less than a $10 million increase from the previous year.

The following year, in the Terps first financial season as a part of the Big Ten, that number jumped to $92,686,128, with the most notable increase being an almost $18 million rise in rights and licensing.

According to the most updated report, in the 2015-2016 year, Maryland's total revenue continued to rise, although slightly, totaling $94,101,697.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

That's my point!

Pocket change, compared to what it would cost.
