Yup. I still am torn between Darkest Hour and Phantom Thread as my favorite Oscar picks but still have one to go, Three Billboards.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

Who really cares? The Oscar seldom goes to the best movie anymore. Star Wars made more than all the candidates combined.
Finally watched Moonlight yesterday. Really Academy? Itwasfvcking boring.

And Klaus dislikes DeBussy. I saw Moonlight and didn’t like it. I saw Star Wars and enjoyed it but wouldn’t say it was significant and the acting was far from special. I probably won’t agree with the winners of several of the Oscars but they seem to generally get it very close to right and my favorites are always serious contenders.

Hey, I like the Patriots, I’m clearly in the minority. :lol2:

Good job.
We just watched it. Good movie -- the asynchronicity takes a bit getting used to. Kenneth Branagh uses all sorts of acting faces looking at the sky. The soldier who killed the kid just walked off? Why can't 400,000 soldiers with rifles set up disciplined firing lines to shoot at the Stukas? The Spitfire pilot was my favorite subplot.
The dogma lives loudly within me.

I certainly didn't mean to infer that the movie that makes the most money is the best one. I agree with you about Star Wars. I nodded off in the middle, like I did with Moonlight. lol!

Klaus can be forgiven as he's German. But Davis, you on the other hand, Patriots fan? :sword:

That depends on your opinion of best.

I think the best is the most gay, or most anti-Trump, or most rabidly pro-gender (the gender changes frequently, just make sure you pick anything but male).

Race is also important but changes from year to year, some years it is important to be white, some years non-white wins.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

Extremely interesting movie and totally unique. Almost no character development at all, very little dialogue. Almost like going through a gallery of paintings on the subject, no segues at all. It deserves more attention than it is getting.

Totally agree. Last year was about giving the black man his due after all their crying. Politics run deep in the art of filmmaking.

It is my favorite of the ones I've seen so far.

Have seen:
Dunkirk (very well described Mik)
Get Out (are you kidding me?)
Ladybird (meh)
Three Billboards (good one but not on Dunkirk level)

Still need to see:
Darkest Hour
The Post
The Shape of Water
Call me By Your Name
Phantom Thread

I have not seen call me by my name and three billboards. The first I may have to see just to complete the circuit but it’s not a subject I want to shell out 30 bucks and several hours for.

Looking forward to three billboards. The thing I liked about Lady Bird was the great acting by the coming of age girl. If not for her I would have hated the movie. The Post was a great topic and great actors but it was a tad slow, maybe I knew the story too well, but I think too many compromises were made to attain the level of suspension of disbelief that I enjoy.

Get out is not on my list.

I agree with Mik’s Take on Dunkirk, I saw on IMAX which is the way to optimally see it.

Finally saw "Darkest Hour."

Story: Fantastic - despite some of the liberties they took with the actual history (such as the subway scene)
Oldman's performance: Amazing. The fact that Oldman is 59, and he had to undergo 4 hours of makeup to portray a 65 year old is interesting. He seemed to get all the nuance of Churchill.
Cinematography: Okay. Too many extreme close-ups. The few scenes depicting Calais and Dunkirk were too obviously CGI. They distracted me.

On a scale of 5 stars, I'd give it 3 ½.
On a scale of 4 stars, I'd give it 3.

I really liked it. Wish there was more. Lots of story left to tell.

I wish Dunkirk had used more CGI - I never got a sense of 400,000 soldiers trying to get off the beach, or of the bravery that was occurring on the perimeter defenses.

I watched half of Dunkirk. Disappointing.

I liked Darkest Hour. Very good acting. The ending was rather abrupt though.

I watched it tonight.

There were pieces missing. Nobody was on Churchill's side, then out of nowhere the king is his friend, then all of a sudden everyone loves him. And then he appears to be briefly sober.

The makeup was terrific, they did a nice job making the historical figures recognizable.

I would have liked to have seen a little more of a story. Of course we all know most of the story but there was something missing.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy
