George had an interesting article about nicotine and how it can be addictive. I thought it would be interesting to see how many people on this forum board smoke, or used to smoke.

As for me, I have never smoked at all.

Smoked a pack a day for 30 years and stopped cold in 2001.

That's roughly a quarter of a million cigarettes worth of smoke inhaled directly into my lungs with no apparent effect, yet.

Of course now I'm not as cool as when I was smoking.

Very similar, Mark. I had just turned 39 when I stopped. I started at 14, though I quit on and off in the interim.

Purity score. he was afraid to come close.

You will recall the two times we allegedly met there were no witnesses.

Started when I was 18. By the time I was finished with school, age 26 I was up to about a pack a day. Stayed that way through age 36. Quit cold turkey then, and haven't gone back.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

Given the way acetaminophen and alcohol donít mix, I havenít kept a bottle of Tylenol anywhere in the house for years.

Smoked in college and quit by age 26. Probably a solid 7 year run.

Stole a few at age 13 but not part of the high school smoking crew.

I always thought it looked cool when I was a kid, but never took it up. Probably puffed on about 3 cigarettes as a teen, mostly as a joke. Lost my virginity to a girl that smoked. Kissing was gross. That may have sealed the deal.

When I was a kid on cold days walking to school I liked to pretend that the clouds of steam on exhaling was smoking. Sometimes I would even make the hand motion of dragging on a cigarette.

I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
My lungs are too bad to ever have smoked.

When I was in 6th grade, Jay Pelton and I were upon the school roof, and he pulled out a cigarette. I tried to act cool, took a puff, and hacked out a lung.

Never touched one again.

I don't think nicotine ever did much for me beyond a vague head rush which receded within minutes. I never had a reason to continue the habit. Let's face it, it's disgusting.

Now alcohol, on the other hand...
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

Because you want to keep looking cool.

And...

The second time is a lot easier than the first.

The third is easier than that.

A quarter million smokes and I enjoyed every one of them.

And I looked cool doing it.
