Too fast to shoot. Too militaristic. And I say that as a man who has a nephew working in a major metropolitan area, carrying a badge and a gun.

Too fast to shoot.

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

The shooting in Wichita bears that out, Jolly. The kid was, according to the story, reaching toward his waist and the cop fired. Look, the cop has his piece out and ready. He has plenty of time to shoot before that kid can bring a weapon to bear. But he should have seen a weapon first.

But can you imagine how he feels now, realizing it was a hoax.

I checked outside, and I don't see Jesus riding on a cloud in the Eastern sky... :lol2:

Speaking of being too quick on the trigger....Something you might want to do in 2018 - Take a concealed carry class. Just because you take one, does not mean you have to get a license and carry a gun. You don't even have to buy a gun, just take the class where they'll let you rent one and teach you how to shoot it.

I think you'll find it very interesting to hear instructors expound upon the use of deadly force and the consequences afterward. I know that's the civilian side, but it does give some insight into the shoot/no shoot mentality and why I think cops are currently being ill trained.

It was very enlightening for me, and I was not unfamiliar with handguns.

Part of the issue is there are too many Vets entering the Police. In the military, they are taught (rightfully so) to shoot to kill, and to to shoot at the slightest provocation. That type of training is hard to overcome in 6 weeks of police training.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

Are police trained in a different way?

Everything I've read says the whole "shoot to wound" stuff is BS. If you draw your weapon, you should expect it to be lethal.

No, they're both trained center mass. But soldiers have more latitude on when to use their weapons within their rules of engagement. LD has a good point.

Ideally, the military guys you hire are former MPs.

I might have phrased it wrong. The point I was trying to make is that if there is a problem, a police officer should generally look to try to de-escalate the problem first and if physical deterrent is necessary, to look at non-lethal force first. Tear gas, tasers, batons, etc... I've seen many assholes get the **** kicket out of them by cops that never drew their weapon. In the military, you got a problem, you end the problem.

In essence, the problem srill comes down to training. Most Police Academies run 6 weeks. Most Bartending Colleges are at least 6 months....
